I guess the railroads hated us
GM sent out an update and I think even changed the backend system to not update the rail info. Either that or told dealers to stop telling us the info as the rail companies were complaining so many people were calling.
Booo...

If they would get their stuff together and move shipments faster there would not be such a problem. 21 days and counting to ship a car 785 miles is ridiculous.

Oh the rail companies hate EVERYONE. There's only 2 left that do shipping and both are ****ing assholes.
I talked with a guy that has a rail stop at his factory. They finished whatever they were making and were ready to put it on a car. Their shipping manager saw the car that they were waiting for about 2 blocks away on the rail they needed. They called whichever railroad that they do business with to ask if they could move the thing over to the factory and got a flat out no. Hell they even offered to get a truck and pull it over and no go. The railroads are pretty much "**** you, give me your money".

so here is a related question. At what mileage point will they start shipping via rail? so I live in Dayton Ohio, cars are made about 4.5hrs away. I'm assuming they will not put cars on a rail, but just by truck? was always curious about that. I'm assuming there is a cut off milage for truck.

Not a hard mileage cutoff, and for most Chevy cars it seems to be around 600 miles, give or take 50 miles, but for the Corvette line it seems to be 1000 miles, give or take 100 to 200 miles. What little has occurred so far I would say the 600 figure applies to the Camaro.

I'm quite surprised to hear negative opinions about rail shippers. I'm sure there will always be snags with certain shipments and not all rail carriers are created equal either. How often do airlines lose your bags? Not often but it happens unfortunately. Not many people complaining that their bags DIDN'T get lost though... In these cases where rail is taking the blame are people sure it's waiting on rail or just reading into status codes too much? I happen to work for one of the Class 1 rail carriers and in the past worked in Michigan as well, specifically New Boston. If a car is loaded on an autorack at the facility it's getting picked up that day (or the next if the load missed the departure cut-off). The delay many might experience occurs BEFORE the car gets on the rail when it sits in a lot full of cars waiting to load. That's not the RRs fault. That's a shipper (Chevy) constraint to hold cars until autoracks are full or close. I can tell you with certainty that train velocity and car dwell (how long a car sits in one place) are key measurements for RR's. Local operations teams are held accountable for exceptions as well. If they have a shipment they are focusing on getting it to destination on or before its committed arrival date. From my experience, loaded auto shipments get huge priority as well. They minimize switching/classification yards and route cars intelligently to reduce crew swaps etc. Depending on how many different RR's handle a railcar will impact the trip time greatly. My opinion of a railcar moving from MI to FL all on the same RR. Keep in mind train crews have same Hours of Service restrictions as truckers do (12 hours for a crew). Day 1 Depart New Boston Arrive Toledo - Recrew - No switching Depart Toledo Day 2 1 Recrew enroute Arrive Louisville Day 3 Switch/Classify @ Louisville to new train Day 4 Depart Lousiville 1-2 recrews enroute - no switching Arrive Jacksonville Day 5-6 Switch and Deliver to Auto Ramp RR's also have a VIN based tracking system so them not communicating that info to shippers is HIGHLY unlikely. I can't imagine the RR's would tell a shipper " Yeah we know we've BEEN giving you this info, but it's annoying to be held accountable so we are going to stop now". So if a quiet order has been issued it would be GM doing it. I have no idea how people are calling RRs and getting info, they wouldn't get very far with that since they aren't the shipper. Happy to answer any "typical" rail handling procedures questions for my fellow Camaro enthusiasts.

I took Sledge's post as to mean that the RR companies were instructed to not provide shipping info to anyone outside of the rail company or the shipper.
So if a dealer or owner called them, they will not provide location/ETA info to them.
