Mustang versus Camaro, Camaro versus Mustang. It’s an ongoing battle fought at drag strips, stop lights and various road courses across the United States. The latest shots were fired in the Windy City after Chevrolet revealed the 2017 Camaro 1LE in both a V6 variant and traditional V8-powered package.
During our time to chat with Al Oppenheiser, chief Camaro engineer, we got right down to business and asked what everyone wants to know: will the 2017 Camaro SS 1LE outperform the Shelby GT350? “That’s obviously our intent. I have the answer, but I’ll let the rest of you decide how we did. Our goal is to up the game with our competitor, just like they upped the game with the GT350. Everyone had to expect we would punch back. I will tell you this car is three seconds faster than the previous 1LE. Your readers can go out and make their own conclusions,” Oppenheiser stated in utmost confidence. It surely sounds like the GT350 is going to have something more to worry about when the 1LE hits the streets later this year, especially knowing the Camaro team benchmarked the hopped up Mustang. “We’re plowing new ground with the V6 1LE, and for the SS 1LE, our initial target benchmark was the fifth-generation 1LE. But, obviously, Ford came out with their GT350 and we changed our sights. We’re not worried,” he added. And so the battle continues. Read more: http://gmauthority.com/blog/2016/02/...#ixzz40OioCF5V Just a thought....Al mentions this "3" seconds difference again....This time it's compared with last year's 1LE.....The previous "3" second differential was I thought comparing the 6thGen 1LE to the 6thGen (non 1LE) base SS....No biggie, I guess... |

Both comparisons have been made, he specifically said the new 1LE is 3 seconds faster than the old 1LE on a 2 minute track. I saw that video last week. I believe GM said the new SS was faster than the old 1LE at the GM proving grounds, or maybe it was another track...not 100% on that.

Here's the snippet from the introductory post about the 1LE...3 seconds faster than the base 1SS on about a 1:30-1:40 track....
How’s that for a laundry list of go-fast goodies? They say the SS 1LE laps the big willow course of Willow Springs a full three seconds faster than the standard SS. The Camaro folks have not released pricing information, yet. But they maintain that the 1LE package has and will remain a bargain in the segment for track performance. It is “track capable” from the showroom, unlike certain competitors, and the car will go on sale in late 2016, with orders like being placed in the summer I wish they'd give the actual times, instead of just the differences... That's cool they compared it at more than one track....I hadn't heard about Milford...Thanks... |

I'm not 100% on Mikford but maybe someone else can confirm either way.

Same thing pretty much as he said awhile back that the 6th gen SS performs the same as the 5th gen SS 1LE...

I'm sure GM has a GT350 they tested against the 1LE, just like Ford bought a Z/28 to run against the R.

I would hope between the vette, camaro, and V teams they would have a GT350, M4, 911, GTR at their disposal.

My guess is they are talking about the 2016 GT350 base, or maybe the 350TP (which if so, would be amazing)
But if its the 350 base...it won't matter when the magazines do their heads up match for 2017 models, b/c the 2017 GT350 will now come standard with all the same stuff as the 2016 GT350 track pack. But....even if the 1LE isn't as fast but if its even close, it will be a hell of a deal as it will certainly be 8 to 10 thousand dollars cheaper than the GT350, which will likely be 53 - 55 K for 2017.

I felt completely defeated with the ford dealer situation and had moved on to the M2(similar msrp to cobra). But really wanted that v8 sound track, menacing appearance and great handling. I had no idea the 1le was coming. Upon seeing it on Instagram I ran laps around the office...couldn't be more excited. You are telling me I get better performance for less. . As you said this war has created some amazing American machines and I hope it continues for a long time to come. I feel like the 1le is my chance to get what I would of had with the cobra(or better according to some sources). Thanks Chevy and Ford even though your dealers are crushing dreams with huge adms I wont hold it against ya |
