Hill Assist in the Manual Camaro

Hi,

I am planning to get the manual transmission on my camaro. However, I live near SF city and as you might guess, with the dangerous slopes the city has, I was wondering if the new camaro has hill assist on it. I am a little nervous when I drive on such slopes , so I am guessing the hill assist would be a good thing.

The 2015 camaro owners manual says that it is available on cars equipped with it. So I dont know which one has it. The manual? or the automatic?

My car has it. I've seen the steep grade where you live at! On an incline, as soon as you release the brake, the car engages the brakes, you don't roll backwards. You remember that, release the brake and wait 5 seconds and drive on. Or you just give it gas and wait for the smell It's no big deal, I actually like it when putting my car on ramps.

Probabaly a second or two, by the time you reach 5 seconds you will be moving forward or rolling backward, or vice versa given the terrain. It is for manual transmissions. I think SF is one of few cities it would be truly helpful.

Yes it gets scary to drive and park(even more difficult) on these slopes especially on weekends. I was wondering that it should have hill assist especially because there is no more a hand brake on the car (which I use a lot when on slopes...I hate that everything is becoming computer and electrical oriented...). Was not sure how easy it will get with the electrical switch.

Also you mention that you need to wait 5 seconds..thats quite a lot IMO... couple of seconds seems adequate...

If GM executed the hill assist as poorly on the 16's as they did on the current cars, it will be more trouble than it's worth. They really did a pathetic job on it.

My suggestion: find a friend or relative with a GM car equipped with hill assist and find out for your own self. I never found it onerous and I have been driving manual transmission equipped vehicles since 1974. But many do not like it so the only way for you to know is to try it yourself.

You mean to say unless you step on the gas pedal?

In San Fran with no handbrake to slowly release as the clutch takes hold, the hill hold might be really useful. As you learn to drive a standard it is easy but the severe hills are a pain without the hand brake or hill hold.

I guess one could use the e brake. Just release the e brake as the clutch grabs? Did they ever change it so one can turn off the hill hold?

You will be hard pressed to find hill start assist fans here. I for one think it works fine. It holds a little bit longer than I think it should, but that may be me adjusting to it. I don't get too many opportunities to use it in Indiana, but I'm getting used to it.
