how are subarus so fast?

Yesterday I am driving to Boston and on the mass pyke I come across a group of subarus. They all look modified with wings, exhaust, and stanced wheels. I decide to race their ring leader when the highway was straight and no traffic. Nothing crazy or dangerous, just 50 to 100 and back down.

I have a CAI, headers, and a dyno tune of 411rwhp. And I wouldn't say I got smoked, but I was decided slower. How are these things so fast???

This isn't the first time I lost to one on the street, and they are always winning my autocross meets, and doing very well at track days. I don't get it.

I assume they were all WRX/STI? Subaru's have a huge enthusiast following and the WRX/STI aftermarket is endless.
In general, enthusiast Subaru owners are dedicated to their cars and perfecting driving skill. They understand the importance of launching and shifting correctly. Once you add tuning and some basic horsepower goodies, Subaru's can be very surprising.
A mildly modified WRX with a good driver can easily hit 60 MPH in the low 4 second range.

I watch them run very impressive times at the track all the time. That's one of the only overseas cars I would consider purchasing.

yes, they were all STIs. It is impressive for sure. Especially for a big sedan with awd and a small engine. I guess im just bitter and wanted to rant lol.

You think Impreza's are big? They're a compact about the same size as a Chevy Cruze

And those cars are actually well made, handle, and perform. Like another poster said, plenty of mods can be done to those motors.

This.

There are a pair of them local to me, one sedan and one wagon, that are a dead match for my Cobra. To a point anyway. AWD makes for a hell of a launch.

don't forget they are also turbo charged from the factory, very easy to crank up the boost and make big power quick

Don't race on the highway. I don't want to read a post about how a member died.

Subarus are great cars, and the AWD gives them a huge advantage in traction. On top of that, a simple turbo upgrade and some tuning can put a lot of cars behind them. If you don't respect modded Imprezas out there, they'll show you what's up.

Considerable weight advantage, AWD, and boost. It doesn't take much for them to add a whole lot of power to those cars.
