installing 3.91 gears in my l99 ss tomorrow

Well I'm finally doing the install, in preparation for upcoming events. I've been sitting on them for a bit and finally gonna get around to installing them. I look forward to the extra "torque" and getting another mod off the list

I'll try to take some pics along the way and report back after its done, and after the break in when I can actually get on it

So what kind of fluid are you using? And what weight? I'm using mobil 85_140 for the break in

I've had gears for 6+ months and I haven't changed the oil on them. They told me it wasn't necessary.

It may or may not be, but I get all my stuff at cost (work at a dealership thankfully) so it's cheap and I have a lift to do all my work so I'll be doing it for my own peice of mind. How much of a difference did you notice with them installed?

So how do you like it? I should be getting my car back today with the 3.91's and a slew of suspension bits. Pretty excited.

How long is this break in supposed to be? A couple hundred miles?

Weeeeeeell, I haven't gotten a chance to get on it yet, but.. I can tell a difference in how fast the gears change. Feels good so far though. Just as quiet as can be unfortunately I did all my suspension stuff a few months back or this would have been a much easier time to do it all (springs, sways, toe and trailing arms, and all new bushings in EVERYTHING)
and it seems everywhere you look there's different brake in procedures, so I'm following the one I've always been told and the one I tell my grt customers I did over at nissan.. 30-50 miles of easy driving to let the diff fluid get up to temp (200°ish) then park is for hours and let it cool down. Then repeat 5 times, just heat em up and cool em down completely. And imo they'll be good to go. It works for the gtr's I've done
best of luck man, you'll love the new gears!

It was very very hard for me to not beat on the gears right away, but I did grit my teeth and cycle them a bunch like you just posted.

Did you re-use the same shim or did you need different shims? What backlash did you go with?

Yeah, I'm on my 3rd heat cycle so far.. not much longer!
And I was actually able to reuse the factory shims and set back last at .007
can't wait to get on this thing and feel the new install
