Elon is on the hunt (Tesla super sedan inside)

I just saw this on another forum. This is a game-changer and not just for the segment, but the automotive industry as a whole.

http://www.wired.com/2014/10/tesla-r...-announcement/

TLDR version:

Tesla is launching a 619hp, AWD, 275 mile range on a single charge, luxury sedan. Oh and it starts at $75k (with less range).

Meh..I've never been impressed with Tesla.

I get it is a lux sedan, but seriously that's a lot of money for a limited range car.

It isn't that limited in many places. Their, "superchargers" can recharge the battery halfway in 20 minutes. With the 85kwh model D you could drive 275 miles on a full charge and if there is a supercharger anywhere along the way you can drive up to 400 miles. If you live in a heavily populated area there is probably a supercharger near enough to plan most trips

Yeah the range is somewhat limited, but this is also a 700hp awd luxury sedan for under $100,000.

The future is now. Charging stations will need to be more plentiful, but this is where the industry will be forced to go in 10-50 years.

The best part about tesla is that they actually look good. Unlike every other electric or hybrid that is mostly electric.

75k and never have to buy gas again? Doesn't sound like a bad idea

Not a game changer at all any more than the base car is.

The game changer will be a sub $25,000 car with 250 miles of range. Nothing changes until the EV game until that happens. The car Musk keeps hinting at might come close to that, but have to wait and see on that.

This is cool for sure, but it isn't doing much more than adding AWD to an existing car by adding another electric motor (which has been demonstrated many years ago)

So an awesome car, but not a game changer and certainly not what I'd pay $75,000 (and UP) for.

Oh and the minor detail of 0-60 in 3.2 seconds with increased range

With this car they proved that they can increase efficiency while adding huge amounts of power and adding usability (awd). That is a very big deal.

You know all they did was add a second motor right?

The increased efficiency is a result of that.

Nothing new here. In fact it's actually a lighter way to get AWD. You eliminate the need for a transfer case and associated drive shafts. Which how the weight was kept low.

Cool, like I said, but adding a second motor is not a game changer. Nor is a 10% increase in range. The Volt gained 10% with it's new battery a few years ago and no one was calling that a game changer either.................because it isn't.

This is very cool. Just not a unique or new idea to add a second electric motor. There have been prototypes over the years with one motor per wheel.

Remember too that this is a 5,000 lb car without driver and it is able to achieve 0-60 in 3.2 seconds and 1/4 mile in 11.8 seconds. That is frankly astonishing performance. A system like this or possibly a hybrid IC/Electric with a corresponding smaller/lighter battery system necessary for a coupe is the future of performance. This car proves it.

This car proves nothing.

There is nothing revolutionary about this car at all. To get the longer range you have to pay above the base.

Sorry, any of the Big 3 could do this without trouble, so I am not going to sing Tesla ' s praises, it's for people with money to waste and a strong need to have the latest "it" car.

The most amazing thing about Tesla is Elon himself and his ability to self promote himself and company to unsubstantiated stock prices only making himself richer.

Last number I saw, Tesla was not making a dime selling cars. They are making a crap load of money selling credits to GM to enable GM to sell cars in California.

Again, a cool car. A nice step for his company that will probably get investors to bid up the stock even more.

But it isn't making anyone take notice regarding this technology.

Here is a 4 motor car. One for each wheel making 1080 HP total.

http://rimac-automobili.com/

Again, very cool. Pushing the limits further. Yayyyyyy! Go gettem' Tesla......................just not new ideas or game changing. Just the application of existing and old ideas. Don't fall for the Musk hype. He has a way of making things sound much better than they are so he can get the stock price up. That is apparently his game and he is VERY good at it.

You still have to pay for the electricity to charge the car at charging stations, your home, etc. I don't know how much it would cost over time compared to gas though.

The P85D is impressive, I must say. The main problem is the price. I think we're still about 10 years away from seeing a GOOD electric car that costs ~$30K new and offers the technology from the current Model S/P85D.

It wont be too much longer now and electric will be the fastest way to get down the strip. It sounds awful but the way electric motors perform can not be denied.
