Horsepower Wars to end with 640 hp SRT

Get your Camaro, Mustang, Challenger before it ends.... Damn CAFE standards.....

Left lane news reporting: Next-gen hemi dubbed "hellcat" found in upcoming challanger

Next-gen Challenger to boast supercharged 'Hellcat' HEMI V8

By Drew Johnson

Chrysler is developing a supercharged version of its legendary HEMI V8 to compete with high-performance vehicles from General Motors and Ford.

According to Automotive News, Chrysler is currently putting the finishing touches on a new supercharged V8 HEMI engine that will debut under the hood of the next-generation Dodge Challenger. The engine could also find its way into the engine bays of other vehicles within the Chrysler lineup.

Code-named 'Hellcat', the supercharged HEMI V8 is tipped to displace 6.2L and generate around 640 horsepower. The supercharged mill will put the Challenger on par with the Chevrolet CamaroZL1 and Ford Shelby GT500.

The next-generation Challenger is slated to debut in mid-2014 as a 2015 model, but it remains unclear if the Hellcat engine will be available at launch. Whenever it does arrive, the mill will be available with Chrysler's latest eight-speed automatic transmission.

Those interested in the ultimate Challenger better act fast, though. A Chrysler engineer described the Hellcat as a "last hurrah" before more stringent CAFE regulations take hold, indicating the supercharged engine will be one-and-done.

Wonder how heavy it will be considering the heft of the non-blown version.

While I think this is cool, I would bet that the price point will be unattainable for most folks. Plus if it's a one and done all the collectors will buy them up before any of us real folks will be able to get a hold of one.

Probably just the 6.2 hemi with a 2300 tvs on it. Dodge does need to do something, their cars are turds.

I don't see any reason why it would be anymore expensive than the ZL1/GT500, current SRT8 starts around 10k less than those 2. It already has the strong Brembo brakes, the Bilstien adjustable suspension, the feature laden interior, etc etc. You would basically be going to the 8 speed auto (which is usually an 800 premium in the other LX cars over the 5 speed auto) and the hellcat V8, maybe 5k difference in engine pricing and probably some tightening of the adjustable suspension.

there is not a 6.2 hemi and has never been a modern 6.2 Hemi, this is a new Hemi.

seriously doubt CAFE or anyone else short of Obama closing down all of them to make Yugo the national car of the USA will stifle the performance wars..

I hope you're right, but I could see huge markups coming with it. After all a one and done of the meanest Mopar muscle car every built will be a very hot idem. I know I'll be a buyer if possible.

You obliviously have no idea what you're talking about, but that is usually the case with people that live with their head in the mud.
