Took a Medical Mysteries in History course, we covered most of the US experiments
#9 - if you actually read up on the Standford prison experiment you'll see that it wasn't as bad as the video made it. It was a 2 week long study, that yes was cut short due to the "guards" abusing their "power." Though volunteers were college students, and they were given a in depth debriefing after the experiment was over. More info on it is here: http://www.prisonexp.org/ #7 - the study was actually conducted on captured POWs as a way for more effective/quicker interrogation results. The experimenters also used hypnotism as a way to get results. The goal was not to get mindless drones. #5 - This whole issue is still being beaten to death by lawyers and human rights activists. The subjects already had syphilis and the experimenters withheld treatment in hopes of studying the long term effects of syphilis. In return the subjects were all given free medical treatment/care (for everything except the syphilis that is), moneys for food, and given free burial insurance (the Department of Health paid all of the burial costs for all 400 of the subjects). In, I want to say, the early 1990s the subjects were given compensation checks - though saying "I'm sorry" in the form of a check is poor form IMO. #3 - these tests were in response to the Germans using mustard gas and chlorine gas during warfare. #1 - Yea, that shit was pretty ****ed up |
