Man texts, "I need to quit texting," before driving off cliff

The dangers ot texting & driving, so please don't do it!

  • Most Popular StoriesMost ReadMore>> HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A college student from Texas believes he is lucky to be alive after a terrible crash. He was texting and driving when his truck flew off of a cliff.
Chance Bothe's truck plunged off of a bridge and into a ravine. One of the last things he typed indicated what almost happened to him.
He wrote, "I need to quit texting, because I could die in a car accident."
After the crash, Chance had a broken neck, a crushed face, a fractured skull, and traumatic brain injuries. Doctors had to bring him back to life three times . Now, 6 months later, he's finally able to talk about what happened.
"They just need to understand, don't do it. Don't do it. It's not worth losing your life," he said. "I went to my grandmother's funeral not long ago, and I kept thinking, it kept jumping into my head, I'm surprised that's not me up in that casket. I came very close to that, to being gone forever."
Chance's father said, if he had a child just learning to drive, he would disable texting and Internet on their phone.
As of August 1st, drivers in Alabama will face a $25 fine the first time they are caught texting behind the wheel.

I'm glad this guy didn't injure or kill anyone else.

As of January 1st, Nevada banned the use of cell phones while driving (other than hands-free devices) with progressively steeper fines for continued violations.

Despite common sense and this law, I still see drivers yapping or screwing around with their cell phones texting . Each month the number of citations issued is broadcast in the local news and the numbers are amazing. People just don't wise up.

Wow. How in GOD's name did he survive that? The front of that truck is INSIDE/under the cab! Plus it burned pretty badly. Really shortened up that truck.

Folks - NOTHING you have to say in a text or phone call is worth losing your life over. In fact, if you REALLY want to enjoy life for a little while, put down the phone and go for a drive. Really clears your head.

In Washington it's illegal to talk without a handsfree or to text, yet I've seen police officers doing it, not to mention standard citizens. :(

I wish there was something I could do about it, distracted driving bad news for everyone. Whenever I get a call and I am by myself, I try to pull over and finish the conversation before continuing on. If I can't pull over, I don't take the call.

I hope the fellow learns his lesson and focuses on driving when he's driving.

The ban on texting and non hands free talking has been in effect here for a few years now, and everyday on my way to and from work I see hundreds of people still doing it. And yes I have also witnessed police talking on thier cells while driving a marked car up the highway too. It amazes me as to what people will try to do while theyre driving thier cars or trucks on the road.

I rather think if you just pull up beside someone talking on their cel while driving and start honking it would disrupt their conversation. I don't do it, but damn I sure want to.

Police are allowed to talk on their cell and drive.

Widespread banning of 'Texting while walking' is soon to come...
gives a new twist to "Can't chew bubblegum and walk at the same time"

I'm constantly admonishing folks to pull their heads out of their Apps

I might have to try this sometime. And then when they give you a dirty look, just yell "OH I'm sorry, is my driving interrupting your conversation??!"

25 bucks? How about a written warning the first time, and the second, 2500 dollars and forfeiture of license for thirty days.
