Tires Again....

First off, I did a search and had trouble finding what I was looking for so I know the "do a search" crowd will want to chime in. Sorry for that. My stock tires lasted about 7k miles and I need new ones. I went to Discount tire this morning and the only tire they could get today was that michelin pilot super sport. I wanted the ps4's, but they would take a day to get. I need them today if possible. I then found the nitto 555 g2 in a 315 for $300 and thought that might be a good option. I will never track the car. it may run a few 1/4 mile passes, but otherwise just street driving. good wear is important because I put some miles on the car. any thoughts?

The only experience I'd ever had with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport was on a John Cooper Works Mini which had a whopping 240hp.

Seemed like a fine street tire.

However if you're going to spend 70k on a car, I think its worth waiting 1 day for a tire that lets you get the most out of that purchase.

I just changed to PS4's on my '18 ZLE. I have to say the PS4's seem like a great tire for this car. I do not and will not ever be tracking the car, and the very minimal traction loss that will occur with these, in contrast to the GY 3R's, is not worth even discussing... from a seat of the pants review.

The GY 3R's were a great tire for sure, and specifically designed for this car, but they really do wear out much faster than I expected. I would estimate they had about 30% tread left after only 4200 miles...street only, and no burnouts or super aggressive road driving. I live in the super hot SoCal desert, and the road temps get up to 150 degrees plus in the summer, which I think does accelerate the wear.

For almost the exact same money, with the PS4's, I get a 15K tread life warranty, lifetime balance, and full road hazard warranty. I believe the average street driver, even of this very track capable ZLE, will never notice the performance difference between the two brands of tires. The PS4's seem to have a slight bit more road noise, which I guess is to be expected with more tread on the tire, but it's not a deterrent, for me anyway.

I mentioned in another post a separate issue of wheel alignment, that had previously been written about on the ZLE's. Some owners were discussing their ZLE's having very bad alignment issues from the factory. In my case, on very close examination of the 3R's tire wear on my car, the factory street alignment was perfect. There was no inside or outside edge feathering or excess wear. The tires had very even wear showing, using the factory spec of 32 PSI cold.

FWIW, I highly recommend the PS4's on the a ZLE for the street.

Take care,

JJ

I have the Nitto 555G2 tires on my 17SS and have had no issues. Good ride and traction.

Are they quiet at highway speeds?

I have the Nittos on my ZL1 as well. I even went up a size to the 315/30 on the rear. Highway noise is fine.

These are exactly what I'm leaning towards right now. Any complaints? I'm not a tire snob, but I don't want to have regrets either.

I would not say for "almost the exact same money".
They are about $100 more each.
Here in canada a set of PS4s is $600 more than the SC3.
Pretty much 3 sets of SC3 for the price of 2 sets of PS4

The stock Goodyear tires are the best tire for the ZL1 M6.

The problems you maybe incurring are from alignment issues.

Before I got an alignment, my car had two issues: above 120mph, it would pull left and in the rain above 35mph, I had to fight the car to keep it straight.

My buddies have SS Sport Cup 2s, Nitto 555's, SS PS4s on their cars and I think for performance and functionality, the stock tires are the best. (not in the wet)

Of course my ZL1 M6 is not my daily; however, I think doing the following will help:

1. no burnouts
2. get an alignment at a REAL shop...like the dealership...
3. take it easy on sweepers and turns
4. avoid pot holes
5. keep the tire pressures at 35 psi, when warm, the tires will go to 37psi
6. try to get yourself a daily so you preserve your investment
7. did I mention no burnouts?

i ended up going with the ps4's. no burnouts is a tough order with those tires because they like to spin. I hope they last well, because other than longevity they are nowhere near the tire the goodyears are.
