Exclamation Katech oil pump and cam install question

I am at the point where I need some suggestions on installing my cam, Katech oil pump and all supporting mods. I have the oil pan and pump off now. My question is should I pull the motor or remove the front bumper cover and radiator out of the way for the removal and install. Any help would be appreciated.

That question purely depends on how lazy you are feeling as far as how much more work you are willing to put in. Regardless, the level of difficulty of working on these motors escalates regardless because both ways presents their own unique challenges.

Do whichever one you feel more comfortable with doing. Me myself, I probably would try everything I could to do it in vehicle, but that's just me.

Ya that’s my feeling also. It’s just difficult installing the oil pan back in place with the motor in the car. You have to jack up the motor a little. But we did it like that in my C7. Just wanted to see what other people thought. Thanks for your input

You should absolutely pull the engine if you are putting a cam in. The correct way to install single bolt LT camshafts is to brace the back of the camshaft while torqueing it. If you torque the camshaft without bracing the back of it, you run a risk of damaging the timing chain and chain tensioner.

Zach nailed it. Do it correctly and pull the motor. Much easier to do the job correctly. And I’d rather pull it than deal with the radiator/ac condenser all monkey ****ed together.

Pull the motor if you have a hoist and stand. leave the compressor in the car so you don't open it up.
I had a friend vacuum the AC before i started and did it in the car. The only bummer was that I had to / chose to drop the cradle to get the pan off and sealed. I did not plan on it, so had to buy a cheap engine support. I do not have a hoist or stand.

Zach, honest question: how do you brace the back of the cam?

There is a large center hole, and 2 holes on the perimeter. We made a tool that slips into the 2 perimeter holes with a half-inch drive in the center. We then can use a breaker bar to hold onto the back side of the camshaft while we torque it.

You can also get 2 dowels/bolts/etc, whatever you can find, and stick them into the back side of the cam. You could then get a large prybar to slip between the 2 pins.

I am sure GM makes a tool that is located in the service docs as well

Is there a way to keep the cam from moving if you install it in the car? I see a lot of shops and people installing them in the car.
