Will a radar + dash cam on the same source draw too much power?

Hey all, I'm planning on hard-wiring my radar detector and dash cam. I have a Valentine 1 + bluetooth dongle and a Street Guardian SG9665GC. In my last car I had these hard-wired into separate fuses under the steering wheel, but the fuse boxes on the Camaro are in the trunk and engine bay. I don't want to run cables to the engine fuse box if I don't have to.

I saw the gen5diy radar detector harness in another thread and thought that was the perfect solution. The harness comes with an optional extra leads for a dash cam.

Harness link: http://www.gen5diy.com/Chevrolet/Cam...arness-220300/

I'm wondering if I will be drawing too much power from the passenger airbag light by having both my radar and dash cam drawing power from the same source. Has anyone else done this? Should I segregate my power sources so I don't overload anything?

Would this require you to have to mess with headliner?

The headliner has provisions for wires to the windshield already.

Dash cams take around 1 to 1.5 amps when active. Radar detector, probably more. Too much current depends on how you wired it all up. If you are piggy backing on an existing circuit, you have to check it's fuse. Most would be fine though. If you are concerned though, you would need a circuit that goes directly to the battery like a fuse splitter.

Basically, if the circuit the air bag light has a fuse of 10 amps or more, then it will probably be fine.

Worst that can happen is you blow the fuse.

I would be worried about having to push on the headliner. Can it be done without

Gotta say I'm uneasy about tying any other electrical/electronic device into the airbag circuit. An airbag is a little like a sleeping bear . . . poking it with a stick and hoping nothing happens doesn't sound like a good game plan.

Thinking of dash cam, they mostly all USB, maximum current on USB is 500mA.

Norm
I believe the circuits are for the airbag light, not the airbag itself.

There is an opening in the headliner adjacent to the windshield, looks like it was made for this.

Yeah you have to pry off the overhead console. I believe its just the airbag light but can anyone confirm?

Here's the guide: http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=440254

Agreed, a dashcam will draw about 500mA, if V1 draws 1.5 it should be fine. I have never seen fuses for less than 5 amps.

I have both an escort radar and a dash cam on the mirror wire with no problem
