STOLEN ZL1 1LE

My Silver 19' ZLE was snatched up on the 1st and I dout it will ever be seen again. Whoever took it got in it with no glass breakage and there was no sign of dragging it out of the parking spot.. Be careful!!

So sorry to read that! I saw another person posted about their ZL1 being stolen in the Houston Facebook group just under a month ago.

FYI to everyone that you should store your key fobs in a Faraday pouch/bag/box to prevent people from using a wireless repeater pick up the signal while you are inside and make the car think it is present. I believe once they start the car using this method they can drive it until shutting it off with the key never being physically present.

I live in Montrose/Heights area. I heard about the key cloning and I bet that's what happened.

I would think that locking the doors by using the handle button and not the remote might be a little more secure. When you press the remote button, it transmits, when you use the handle button the remote is passive and the door antenna is reading, very small frequency footprint.

The method described does not need any button presses on your remote. This can happen in the middle of the night when your keyfob is in your home and your car is outside. Think about it; while your keyfob is in your pocket your car knows it's OK to pop the trunk, unlock the door, and start when you hit the buttons on the car. Thieves just need an amplifier/repeater. It's quick, your car isn't damaged in the process - no noise, no broken glass, and your car is now theirs.

You need to keep your fob in something that doesn't allow it to communicate with your car, ie a Faraday cage.

I get it, I used to work on these types of RFAs. Passive remote functions don't transmit, which is why I recommended it. But they do respond to pings, so you should keep the remote at least 25 feet away from the car while parked for the night. Now, if they're using a high tech code decrypter that doesn't rely on intercepting remote commands, well...... good luck.
