Looking for an aftermarket PDR that is comparable to our factory PDR

I really screwed up. When I ordered my 2023 ZL1 I did not request the PDR option. It would have been a constraint due to a chip shortage, and when the chips came in I called my dealer to add the option, but my "Bucket-List Bad-Ass" was already being built and I was too late to get it installed. This is the only true regret I have through this entire experience.

I have seriously considered doing an install after the fact, but the amount of labor to install the factory unit is massive, including a windshield replacement! But these PDR units are so cool! I would really love to get a unit that is truly comparable to the one my vehicle should've had!

Anyone with info of comparable after-market units to share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot!
Brett.....

You can do the PDR install without changing the windshield. I did it on my '22 SS 1LE, but admittedly there are lots of details that one must get right to complete the install. Here's a thread on the install:

https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=527969

Some of the info in that thread pertains to the pre '19 PDRs as there were some changes after that. But you can pick thru what actually is part of the install. My '22 info comes in on page 6.

A Garmin Catalyst or the AIM Solo2 are great choices but they each do not do what the PDR does.

The PDR has easy to use full vehicle integration that datalogs lap time/lines and deep vehicle info along with video recording. Yeah, the PDR video quality sucks and the sound is terrible at high speed, but the latter can be fixed. If you care more about all the info more than the being a YouTube hero then the PDR is great. Take the data and use Cosworth's free Toolbox and Pi Toolbox software and the amount of info available is excellent. It's surprising to hear how many PDR owners do not know about the deep info that is available via the software. They think it's just a video and lap time recorder.

Oh please tell me they are incorporating the OBDII data, that is the major selling point of the PDR since the audio and video are crap but cant beat the data analysis

At this point I'm not really at liberty to discuss anything other than that we are aware of the desire for ODB2 integration. Are there any other features anyone would like to see I might pass along? I'll keep you guys posted with what I can, when I can. I will say that I have been approached about doing some track testing when the time comes. This will likely occur on the road course at the NC Center for Automotive Research. Hopefully we can discuss some things by then.

I for one would love for there to be a button that buffs the driver mod

Jokes aside, definitely peaked interest. Prior to this I only knew HPTuners have their TrackAddict app which I was thinking of following since I already have a MPVI2+ sitting around

The big issue with PDR on track is that it picks up the sound buffeting past 85mph. The only thing the PDR should be picking up is the sound of the engine/exhaust.

Hardware wise, I'd love something that is similar to the Race Capture Track V2 (not the V3). Small and light accelerometer puck that can be mounted nearly anywhere quickly and non-permanently (like velcro to carpeting). Separate GPS antenna. OBD connection reading CAN. It has to be CAN (with as many presets as possible). If it's just basic OBD PIDs, who cares?

I'd like it to connect connect via bluetooth to multiple devices on multiple platforms because I'd want to use with Solostorm running on an Android tablet for logging and review and iOS on my phone with a Catalyst-like display doing Catlyst-like coaching while running.

If it doesn't give me anything I can't do now with a Race Capture Track V2 plus tablet plus external video camera of my choosing, I'm not going to be interested.

If it's under $500, I'll buy it. If it's $501-$750, I'll have to see it in action and be convinced it's "better" (but I'll almost certainly buy it anyway in a late night or early morning "ef it"). If it's over $750, I'll buy one...used at something far south of $750 or go without.

The results of my inquiry returned very promising options. I am excited! I am also feeling relieved because I am starting to realize that I don't think I will have to pull out the interior and replace my windshield. Our factory installed Data Recorder costs $1300, so if Garmin, or any other seller can offer a comparable resource, I would be willing to pay a comparable price. I wish I could offer data acquisition, & feature additions, but I am a newbie in this area.

What about adding more data to a HUD? Making the HUD screen configurable? Also make the HUD display unit movable, so you could place it in a location to your liking. I wonder about making the HUD a thin strip, like 12-18" long, so you can locate the data along the bottom of the windshield, or along the top. Maybe this device/display could also show the chosen data from the front as well. Obviously this display unit would not be able to show the track, so there could be an additional display module that would be appropriate for a larger square HUD display.

One last thing would be a "Screen Capture" button that would automatically capture the current screen and automatically save it in a folder.

Mr. SLED, Thank you for the intriguing information. I will wait for your product. I was really dreading the amount of work/effort involved.
Brett...
