Tire Advice for ZL1 1LE

I'm looking for a set of summer tires (I live in the SF Bay Area, so I run summer tires all year round) and plan to save my Supercar G3s for the track when it warms up.

Ideally I'd like to improve ride quality for my wife, but keep as much grip as I can. I prefer tires that warm up quickly. I'd prefer to not gain tire weight. I don't mind road noise. I don't care much about longevity (tread wear), I put about 5k miles on my car each year so if I buy a set a year I'm fine with that.

Browsing tire rack, here's what I've seen:

OEM - Supercar G3s, Tread Wear=100
F: 305/30ZR19 29lbs
R: 325/30ZR19 31lbs

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, Tread Wear=300
F: 305/30ZR19 27.9lbs
R: 325/30ZR19 31.5lbs

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, Tread Wear=180
F: 305/30ZR19 26lbs
R: 325/30ZR19 31lbs

Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R Tires, Tread Wear=60
F: 305/30ZR19 28lbs
R: 325/30ZR19 31lbs

There were plenty of other options but the weight was just so high that I skipped them. Gaining 4lbs per tire is A LOT.

If we only cared about weight (the only fact I have on paper) then clearly the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 wins with its net 6lbs of rotation weight savings. But I'm sure there are other factors that are not visible.

If anyone has first-hand experience with these tires, I'd love hear about it. Specifically in regards to how they compare to the OEM Supercar G3s.

If you have other suggestions please let me know, thank you!

PS - I'd be especially grateful if someone knew of a wider rear tire that was the same weight or only marginally heavier.

I have the Michelin PS4S tires on my Zl1-1LE. They are fantastic tires. They ride much smoother than the OEM Goodyears and do not need a lot of time to heat up before having traction. They are also very good in the rain. Check out the reviews on Tire Rack. I've also seen people track these tires, but I prefer to switch back to the GY's for track time.

I switched to the PS4s. Gonna save the stock tires for the track. Can't say the ride is noticeably less firm. Might be, I just don't notice it. I really do not notice any difference in handling on the street or when driving my favorite twisty back roads. The difference undoubtedly would show up on the track. The PS4s are far better in the rain, somewhat better when cold and do not seem to shower the side of my car with small rocks and gravel, which is a big plus for me. Overall, a better all around street tire that allows you to save the limited treadlife of the stockers for where they will shine.

This is a great thread !!!!!! I'm on a similar path as you. I kept the stock tires for the first year of ownership. The only reason is because I couldn't find anyone to buy the stock tires from me.

My desire to track the car was real until the dude whose expertise I was going to rely on and get track driving lessons from ended up moving to another state.

Once he left, I realized that pushing the car on the back country and mountain roads near me is going to be enough for me. The stock tires are too much of a niche tire for the driving I am going to be doing.

Pilot sport 4s are on my radar. I"m looking forward to hearing opinions on the other choices you have here.

Were S007As that heavy to have not made the list?

You want to save your Goodyears for the track, but would consider dailying on Trofeo Rs? What?

Just get the PS4S, they're the best all around (summer) street tire made.

Where on Earth did you get that idea?

I track all my cars and this one is no different.

You may be referring a thread I started about softening the ride while on the street because my wife won't get in the car with me, though that has nothing to do with my opinion on the car. If you read that thread you'd see that I refused to alter the car in any way that could not easily be put back for the track (ie: tire mod only).

I did my searching, I found no solid threads on the topic just a bunch of passing random comments. I'm looking for concrete comparisons between these tires.

Bummer about the dude. Have you looked into HPDE in your area? It's an excellent place to start. From there you'll get some confidence, learn a track then likely find a track group to regular track days with. I definitely recommend giving it a try especially with a car like ours

I paid 70k for the car, I'm not going to limit my joy to save a few hundred bucks in tires each year. I wouldn't do that for a 30k car either.

It's not about $ $ $ its about all the qualities I listed in the original post and any insight anyone has to share about them. Thanks

Among a few others.

The S007As were 33lbs each, net +4lbs on the rear. Not a deal breaker but there'd need to be some equally good reason to counter the +4lbs.

The reason I get picky about weight is that tires are rotational mass.

Did you look at Conti ECS? I would be inclined to go with those or PS4S for year-round street tires in your environment.

Remember that wheels/tires in this size are extremely heavy, so 1lb is a small percentage of the total weight. There's more to be gained in the wheels than the tires.
