First mods

Hello everyone, just bought a 2019 I4 Camaro. New to the whole turbo scene and was wondering, if I get a cat-less downpipe do I need to get the car tuned?

Yes and no. Many have went un-tuned without any issues. You may or may not get a CEL if you have a smartphone you can buy a cheapy Bluetooth OBDII device Download Torque and clear it when it occasionally comes up. A tune will void your warranty but get you much more power.

Oh and welcome to the cult.

Welcome! The very first mod you should do is the JacFab Boostolator, sold by BNR here: http://www.jacfab.net/BNR-High-Perfo...alve_p_25.html

There are some threads on it. A tune is not necessary. Like EB said above with the DP, you'll get an occasional CEL, but you can wipe it with a bluetooth OBDII tool and your phone quite easily. Mine produces one about every 6 weeks or so.

Personally i feel simple bolt-ons are your best first mods. I wouldn't add the Boost-o-lator until your done with those and looking to get a tune.

I guess that I consider the BOL to be a very simple part swap. It takes about 20 minutes and makes a huge difference, in my opinion. Either way, get it done somewhere along the line!

What are your ideal first mods, then?

Simple Bolt-ons Charge Pipe and Throttle Body, Cold Air Intake and Catless/Catted Downpipe.

The Boost-o-lator is a great addition but without a programmer or tuning it's not utilizing the full potential again my opinion. The simple bolt-ons while they don't add much more over crank without a tune really awaken the powerband putting your car closer to that 275/295 crank number at the wheels.

The throttle body is something that interests me. Is this not something that would require a tune? I'm sure it would render my throttle controller useless.

I had one of JacFabs 72mm TB kits it worked well never threw a CEL or caused any issues until the coupler got old at which point I was getting the FMIC and couldn't use the 72mm TB anymore anyway. It does little to nothing for throttle response just pulls in more air volume to the tune of 1-2whp un-tuned. You won't see any gains from this directly tuned honestly. Throttle Controllers are in my opinion purely a daily driver preference they do nothing for power but make daily driving feel much more responsive. I didn't get any change at the dragway with it on or off at all it just feels better on the road.

Good info, thanks. And yeah, throttle controllers do nothing for you at WOT. But I do love it as a daily driving tool.

What is a good, low priced obd2 reader?

This is the one I've had for 4 or 5 yrs. now. Just Download the Torque App on your smartphone. Plug in the OBD2 then open the app and pair the device. It should sync without issue. They do make them iOS compatible as well i just have an android phone.

Don't mean to hijack the post but does this reader allow you to remove the CEL as well??

Catless will set the engine light off... full time.. not just occasionally. Even if you clear it with obd reader, it will come right back on. Since your in FL.. check out BNR, they will guide you. If you close to a tuner, you can ask them to plug in and turn the 2nd O2 sensor off and you wont get the engine light for the catless. The catted downpipe is the occasional light, but even some of those trigger the light all the time.
