Radar detector

I want to get a radar detector for my convertible Camaro. If I'm driving Camaro, the top is probably down, and a radar mounted up around the rear view mirror won't be very subtle. They're legal here in FL, but it would be nice not to draw extra attention from having an obvious detector. I've had a Valentine One in the past (quit working) and know they have a remote display, but I'd like one with newer features so I'm looking at the Escort Max 360.

What have you guys done?

Depends on state/town and what that particular police officer's thought is on them. Years ago in NJ, I got pulled over by a police that was behind me. He never used radar and just "paced me" but I had a radar detector that was pretty bright in the windshield at night.

I was going about 15 over the limit. When he walked up to my car, he saw my radar detector and said "You are a habitual offender" and something about getting away with speeding because of the radar detector. He then wrote me a ticket for 34 over the limit, which would be a 5 point ticket and huge fine (35 and over required court and possible suspension of license, so he kept it under that)

Like I said, he didn't get me on radar, he just followed me and "paced me". He was a jerk and knew that It would be my word against his. I went court to fight it, and of course, the cop wasn't there and I had to either plead guilty and pay the fine, try to plea bargain or come back for another court date. I ended up pleaing down to a lower speed for a 2 point ticket and fine rather than have to return to court multiple times to fight the unjust ticket.

So yes, some cops will see a radar detector and write tickets because of them.

That is why I changed to a Valentine one with a concealed display...nothing is lit or flashing that can be seen from outside the car, and the radar detector can't even be seen easily when a police officer is standing at the drivers side door. (See pics posted below)

For convertibles, I highly recommend one with a remote concealed display where the main unit can be dark on the windshield, mounting the main unit behind the mirror on passenger side and hardwiring all of it. I love the Valentine One with arrows on concealed display...the head unit is dark when set up this way, so not obvious in convertible.

Here is the power wire where I ran it to the top. This goes across and down the passenger "A Pillar" to the center shifter console

Where I mounted the Radar Detector:

CONCEALED DISPLAY with directional arrows of where the radar is coming from (the main display is dark when this is connected so no lights blinking on the windshield...important for convertibles)

What I REALLY like about this approach is that if a police officer walks up to my driver's side, this is their view.....there is no obvious radar detector. They can't see the main unit, which is dark and behind the mirror, and they can't see the concealed display down by the knee pad.

I know they are legal most places I drive, but some police officers see one and may not cut a break because they figure someone with one has gotten away with speeding many other times. (oh, and please ignore the paper towels...lol...realized I wiped the windshield and still had them in the passenger seat!)

I have the Blinder HP-905 laser jammer and love it... Not all cops know why they're laser guns aren't working. I've been hit... slowed down/turned it off (as per Blinder instructions) and seen the confused look on the motor cops face while driving by him.

Blinder HP-905 laser jammer

I have the Blinder HP-905 laser jammer mounted in the grill (left and right sides). The switch is located under the hud switch. It works!

How did you mount the sensors in the grill? Did you have to remove front clip to mount them?? I assume you have the dual sensor version since you mentioned mounted left and right sides..

How are you guys powering your radar detectors? With the power point next to the armrest it isn't as appealing to the eye with a cord running all the way there from the windshield or under the dash somewhere. Valentine's hard wire option looks pretty easy but no idea which wire I would want to put it on so it shuts off with the car. Did you guys with V1's look at the Savvy module that plugs into the OBD2 port for power in lieu of hard wiring? Looks like OnStar can't pull advanced diagnostics with it plugged in but not sure how big a deal that is. Kind of cool you can set a minimum speed for the warnings with it too. No more falsies in parking lots or driving through a neighborhood at 30mph.

I had a local audio shop install it (yes 2 sensors) but it looks simple, reached in from the ground or under the hood, not really sure but they used a double sided tape which is holding up just fine. Then they covered the RJ cable with split loom.

Since install. Zero tickets and 2 strange looks from cops as i cruised through their speed traps...
