PDR: Phantom Steering Angle ?

PDR says I'm providing steering input but I'm not.

Driving in a straight line, steering angle says 5-ish degrees.

When I come to a stop, steering angle drops to 1-ish degrees.

When I take off normally, steering angle shoots up to 8-10-ish degrees.

Alignment comes to mind but I'm not providing any input, the car goes perfectly straight. Could it be a silly sensor?

Any chance when you installed your steering wheel you got it one tooth off or the design isn't "square" to the teeth so when it was aligned the rack actually isn't perfectly centered?

Yes, actually I believe I did get it one tooth off and haven't gotten around to correcting it.

But would the steering angle sensor be able to know about that?
Seems like your steering wheel could be upside down and as long as the column is straight the input angle would read zero?

I'm guessing, this is new territory for me.

Yes.

After install you straightened the wheel one tooth off, the rack was moved 5 degrees from center (speaking in terms of the sensor reading). Then you had the toe fixed to the car drove straight. So the sensor reads 5 degrees of input yet you are going straight.

I had my 1SS 1LE aligned during my first oil change and after my steering wheel was off about that much according to the PDR. My steering wheel also looked a bit off center to me. Turning it all the way to one side and looking at the flat bottom and then all the way to the other made it easier to see. Three alignments later the wheel is centered and PDR reads mostly 0 when driving straight down the road. It was a bit of a pain getting it done right but it drove me crazy.

Not saying you're wrong, but this doesn't make sense to me.
It's not like I pulled out the shaft or pinion and put them back into the rack 1 tooth off. It's just the steering wheel.

If the rack moved, the wheels turned, if the wheels turned, it would feel like my alignment was off and I'll feel pull.

However, when I drive straight, the steering wheel is visibly slightly turned to the right but that's because I mounted the steering wheel 1 tooth off from the original center on the shaft.

This makes more sense to me. It's more likely my factory alignment is slightly off and not enough for me to feel it pull but enough to register?

...

Regardless, I will try remounting the wheel back to center and I will get an alignment since I'm in need of both anyway

I don't even understand the steering angle in the car, mine will throw some insane numbers sometime that aren't even possible. like 180 degrees, haha

You OK? 180 degrees means half rotation.. steering wheel upside down. Full rotation... mind blown.. 360 degrees! I dont thing camaro has that many turns from center.

IF you had car aligned, they forgot to lock wheel in center position and aligned it.. or forgot to reset "center" position in the software.

ha duh, I was thinking steering angle meant the steering angle of the wheels. That makes more sense. I think the wheel angle would be a more useful number on PDR though.

Going in a straight line doesn't mean you are not providing input. Taking your hands off the wheel is only way to not provide input, and you can't drive very far like that. I'm not sure the monitoring of the steering angle is that precise, or even has to be.

you swapped the wheel...guaranteed the issue is with the wheel installation position compared to stock.

Gm wheels are not keyed ? Most i've seen have a missing tooth that guarantees it only goes back ONE way.

OK. I will rephrase to "it is likely" something is positioned incorrectly after the new wheel installation.

Sounds like the sensor should be re-calibrated.
I had to have this done when I had the sensor replaced on my old camaro.

You will have to take it to the dealership to have thsi done.
