[My boot has a bunch of folds where it meets the shifter/knob, because the pass-through opening on the boot was much larger than the outer diameter of the Raceseng adapter.] Edit: I added pics below for reference. The first pics isn't mine, but it's an example of the approach I used. On mine have the boot folder over a zip tie to hold that shape. The other pics are mine. This is after multiple test fits. It looked worse the first few tries because I was zip tying the boot tight to the Raceseng adapter, which resulted in more folds. Now, I just have a loose zip tie as a retainer to hold the boots shape, then boot is lightly slipped over the Raceng adapter. Last edited by DeuceCam; 12-25-2024 at 11:00 AM. |

What I did was to take everything out and installed NTA adapter first, then slid the OEM shift boot on top of that, and finally I used that silver plastic ring between the knob and the leather boot to avoid the knob twisting and applying pressure directly to the boot and potentially damaging it. You'll have to file down an indexing tab on the inside of the silver plastic ring to get it to fit over the adapter. I only removed enough so that it would fit over the adapter. Hope this helps! |

I see where I went wrong now. I separated the boot from the black plastic retainer - this was the point of no return. My big mistake was not realizing there was also clips holding the retainer in place.

Can you glue it back on? Alternatively maybe getting a used one? I plan on getting an alcantara one at some point and or making my own since I have spare alcantara and it looks like this boot is just glued on.

It might be possible, but I don't think I'd be able get it looking OEM again by hand. I'm guessing GM uses a machine to get a quality fit-and-finish.
I followed the Barton install vid which was a mistake. They don't mention the retainer clips at all and suggest using a paint scraper to pry the black ring off the shift knob. Problem is the boot is glued to the ring, so to even get a paint scraper under the ring, on has to break the glue seal. Doing this probably stretched the leather a bit as well. I'll definitely search for a used one. I edited my previous posts regarding my install process and removed the embedded Barton video.

If you go back and look at mine posted on page 6, what you WON'T notice, is that I also removed the black retainer from the boot, BUT it's in there, UNDER the boot. Loose, not attached, but it's under there. Was necessary to make everything snug. Shoulda left it on! Without it, the adapter is able to sit too low. You could snug it down in the right place, BUT, then the boot is sorta floating loosely, and the Raceseng boot cap thingy jingles against the bottom of the adapter. With the black retainer on there, I just let the retainer sit naturally where it was, and tightened down the set screws. I think it's about 1/4" higher than stock, if even that much.

I was able to improve the look of my setup considerably. Thanks to david_acm and Abubaca for their help. If interested, I did a write-up with pics in my journal: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showt...8#post11464688
