“ seat lever housing on top of seat was loose ”
Mine became loose when loading dog in the back. Needed a shot of epoxy and it’s been good since. |

Moderately aggressive break in works, the canned language in most owner manuals is out of date |

I did the proper, as you say, "moderately aggressive" break-in and had zero oil consumption. My new forged internals were broken in by the shop, but the engine still doesn't drink much if any oil as far as I can tell.

These OEMs always prescribe conservative break in procedures because they don't want owners going nuts, but it's well documented most break in is done after about 10 heat cycles. Abrupt throttle, cool off, repeat - early oil changes - it's worked for me with many engines
Worst thing you can is cruise down the freeway at 70 in top gear - but I see it all the time |

Sorry for those that have this problem, I dealt with it on my both of my GT350s, one had its engine replaced because of it (was using a quart about every 80 miles at the end). A real pain in the rear end. Broke it in properly to.
I feel fortunate my ZL1 doesn’t use any oil. Broke it in mostly by the book and changed the oil/diff fluid at 500 and 1500. I have about 4100 miles on it now and have been getting on it a lot the last 1000 miles. It is still at the top of the dipstick from the 1500 mile oil change. |

WOW read this because I am just looking at Posts for a rare change, a PCV bypass may find its way into making your Camaro not blow so much Oil also, I run a elite E2x Ultra catch can, did not read all the post here....But I built a couple Fifth gens always used catch cans, and the LT 4 could use this.... https://www.mightymousesolutions.com...t4-pcv-adapter it may help alot for usage of oil, I may use a quart per change ; Direct injection engines are known for using oil BTW. Have my car now Having a BTR stage 2 cam and new 2650 installed with Katech Chain, oil pump , Long tubes and cats, DSX LID , boostapump, LME cover , Tunnions, NW 103 , Biggulp, etc etc Old timer here Just newer to the LT4

I have a new to me 2017 Camaro ZL1 6MT which used 6.5 quarts (10W40 Mobil1 Supercar) of oil for 3319 miles I drove it- that's a quart for every 510 miles.. Car has 17552 miles now and I bought it from Carmax and I bought maxcare as well. I took it to Carmax under their 90 day warranty and both time they were like it is normal. I really didn't calculate the amount until recently and now I know it's an issue and may why the previous owner sold it to Carmax. I drive it most of the time around 2 to 4k RPM and haven't taken it to track, drag strip etc. So a mix of city plus spirited in 50% sport 20% track and 30% Touring... Car is 100% stock what I can see.. no clue about internals but I highly doubt it is touched..
I asked a local Chevy dealer and they told me they can do an oil consumption test. The person I talked said they would document the oil levels every 1000 miles. He also said to tow it to the dealership if oil light comes on and don't add oil as they want to document every additions. Can someone shed some lights on their oil consumption tests and how it went? If they find it is not normal, do they fix it or replace the engine? Any experiences on dealing with Carmax Maxcare? Last edited by libis22; 01-27-2025 at 03:35 PM. |

When we break-in an aircraft piston engine... you run it at WIDE OPEN THROTTLE until the oil temp stabilizes... then change the oil. When we break-in the F1 Tunnel boat Mercury Racing 2.0 & 2.5L V-6 Outboards that produce over 300hp NA... we do it at WOT!!! When most people buy a ZLE... they pu$$y-foot around for 500 miles and then complain about spending more money on oil. My first ZLE had 13,000 miles on it when I bought it... I changed the oil from the Mobil1 junk to Amsoil 15w-50 and let it eat!! First weekend trackday and it took 1.5 qts. Changed the oil the next day... next trackday weekend less than 1 qt consumed. Now she has just turned 30K miles and after removing the OEM oil cooler, fixing the over-fueling issue that was washing the cylinders with raw fuel that could be seen by my rear bumper GoPro every shift thru WOT... ZERO OIL CONSUMPTION in over 1500 miles of driving on the street and two trackdays. SHOCKER!! So I just acquired a 2019 ZLE shop car that has 15K miles and had the engine and supercharger replaced 1888 miles ago under warranty. So essentially I have a virgin LT4. I plan an extensive amount of video updates on my YouTube channel to log all the data... Stay TUNED!!! |

![]() ![]() I agree, the owner's manual break in is to satisfy the lawyers. Run it hard, but don't abuse. Don't decel from high RPM. Change oil that first time well before the "monitor" tells you. 500 miles. I bought both my Gen5 SS 1LE and my current '22 SS 1LE new. Broke them in hard. Both will go thru a full track day weekend without using any oil. Lots of street use too, no consumption. Catch cans only have about a tablespoon in them over many thousands of miles.
