Yeah, if it ever gets completely full you're going to have a very bad day as it starts to injest liquid oil into the intake...

Me neither.
. Serious question though(because I have no idea) Has there ever been a catastrophic engine failure because of NOT having a catch can? Especially for those that are NOT daily drivers and barely put 1-2k miles on per year, occasional spirited driving but not beating the crap out of the car?

Emptied my Elite Engineering catch can here:
Emptying mine gets a pretty good amount of oil/gunk each time I drain it. ![]() Need to do another oil change and drain next week and will see how much I have collected this next time

Agreed and I like my car needing to deal with Air/Fuel not Air/Fuel and oil.

Anyone ever let this catch can stuff sit in a glass jar for a few months? I'd be interested to see if it layers out. Certainly looks like oil but could be a lot of water vapor condenses in that can as well.

The ZL1 has dual injection, no need. *edit* guess not. Thought I heard savagegeese say it was dual injection in his original review.
The LT1 already has an air oil separator. DI deposits are overblown, especially now with the dexos2/supercar low SAPS oil. This isnt a mid 2000s german car. If you're modified then YMMV.

Dual injection? Huh? It's direct injection only.

LT4 (ZL1) is direct injection.
LT5 (ZR1) is dual injection.

I Drag Raced for 25 plus years 1976 Thru 2002, and always vented the valve covers to the atmosphere like the pre PVC , ran an Evac system .
Wet value (Carburator or Port injection) would clean the valves to a point , Direct Injection as we know has no fuel passing by the Intake valve , the build up can be excessive over time , no other reason other than EPA regulations . I do think GM could of added a Catch Can to minamise the buildup of crank case vapors , and be part of the oil change service. I have a warranty for 4 1/2 years (power train) , and as we know the SC has to be disassembled, and that's not going to happen. I did meet a person with a 17 ZL1 she had 100 plus k miles , I asked if she had any problems , 1 injector replaced under warranty. So it's nice to know the LT4 has longevity.
