It only makes cents.
That's the way I've seen it as well. I always ran 87 octane regular in my '16 1LT V6. During the break-in period of my '21 3LT V6, I ran 91 octane premium, just because. But other than that, I have enjoyed the price advantage of being able to run the LGX on regular!

On the other hand, it's only premium for the '74 460 Ranchero and '73 5.0 RHO Maverick...

91... 93 isn't very prevalent around here. Never have had any issues with 91. I've run it in all my cars, motorcycles, small engines... etc.

I agree. The 3.6L V6 got DI and VVT first, with the resulting higher comp. ratio and output. We had to wait for the LT1 for those advancements in the V8 engine. I had the 5th gen car with the 1st gen V6 and always ran premium in it for maximum performance and engine protection.

I've never run higher than 91, nothing much higher around where I live unless it's avgas. Don't octane boosters mess up catalytic converters and change the spark plug colors? That was my understanding from the many threads on here through the years about it. I hope I'm wrong though

I use 91... 93 is not readily available around here. I've run 91 in all my cars, bikes, small engines forever... Never had any kind of issues. Honestly I wonder if someone went and put gas in my car and I didn't know which they put... 91 or 93, wonder if I could actually tell the difference. I'm guessing not.

I think the general consensus is that a great many octane boosters are snake oil. After I put a procharger on my V6 I figured I better boost the gas and got the brand held in highest regard by the FI experts on the 5th Gen site. Can't remember now what that brand was but sure enuff when I pulled a couple of spark plugs they were a very weird color. When I posted a pic on Camaro5 everyone said, "Stop driving it and get it to a shop!". But the car ran great and without issue. I did eventually quit using the booster and the engine continued to run fine on 91.

My thought is try and use a gas station that is frequently used so the turnover rate is high no matter what octane

Yes , 93 is the least bought gas. At a slow gas station 93 could be old.

Can you run Cam 2 Unleaded 100 Octane gas in the SS's? Like mix it half a tank of 93 and the other half Cam 2 100 Unleaded?

Yeah, the first time you see that rust color all kinds of things run through your head, especially if you pull the heads and look at the chambers & valves. If you pull the plugs for an analyzation, it will be non-conclusive with that stuff on them.

I have a Union 76 station nearby that sells VP101 (unleaded with California additives) at the pump. we don't have 93 here, so I mix 5 or 6 gallons of that with the rest 91.

In Ontario 94 Octane is widely available at almost every Petro Canada…

That’s what mine gets…

Some might be snake oil, but the relevant ones that everyone talks about and that come up in internet searches (Boostane, Torco, Race-Gas, maybe others) contain non-negligible amounts of MMT and they simply work.

I have back-to-back HPT data logs from the same track, same day to prove that Race-Gas immediately eliminated clearly present knock retard altogether, which means it must have tangibly increased the octane level of my 93 pump gas.

As a result, I'd be a bit less forthcoming about any "snake oil consensus".

Now, as to how detrimental the orange discoloration on spark plugs they cause is, or whether these have long term "cat killing" properties is a discussion worth having, but these are not snake oil---they are explicitly disallowed by GM, but they do work.

Thats awesome! Do you feel the car run smoother or little better performance wise? I bet it has a nice smell too!
