While a catch can may not be required it does catch oil that makes it's way back into the intake manifold and heads. I don't know about you, but the only thing I want in my combustion Chambers is air, fuel, and spark.

So basically what we have here is the worst possible conditions for carbon buildup.

-Long intervals between oil changes (9-12k)
-No catch can
-over 100k miles
-0w-20 oil, aka super thin, which undoubtedly allows more oil into the intake since there are numerous records of the truck motors burning it through the intake via AFM

extreme carbon buildup theory circulating all GM DI v8 forums = pretty much busted (we'll of course need more high mileage examples to make it 100%)

Thank you 00pooterSS of performancetrucks
I agree it is worse case other than the fact that he used full synthetic dexos approved oil.

That’s a different story tho. Not diluting the intake charge is a legitiment reason to run one. Especially if you’re tuned. That’s when I’ll buy one.

All great stuff in here. I actually like this thread better than most I've read in the past month. Learning stuff!

I'm so glad for this. Hopefully we can see some high mileage camaros soon. Gives a lot more peace of mind considering the coking and A8 is the two things that makes me iffy on keeping this vehicle long term.

I'm not running one so even better. But careful what you say. I'm surprised a certain vendor hasn't chimed in yet

So if the SAE paper cites that they found that the significant portion of carbon buildup on the valves and intake came from the exhaust gas, then I wonder what eliminating the EGR effect in the cam timing will do over the long run.

Since you can tune out the EGR over retard at light loads, this maybe will eliminate a lot of that?
