First of all doc7000, the 2018 stang is underrated, the cars are dynoing about 420 rwhp which is 480 plus HP at the flywheel, the stang is using the super great 10 speed automatic that Camaro only uses in the ZL1, the stang is using more gear and the great Michelin pilot 4S tires for more bite. The stang is easily getting 118 and 119 mph trap speeds in the 1/4 mile versus 115/116 for Camaro proving more HP. If Camaro does nothing the 18 GT stangs will be winning a lot more drag races. Camaro had the mustang GT covered for the 15, 16 and 17 model years, but that's over for 18. |

Generally no.
However, if it is an engine within a "family" it can be done. But there used to be 3 defined levels of change for an MCE1 through MCE3. It is very possible, but GM has not generally done it in the recent past. It's a lot of work. But historically, GM went from the 5.7L to the 6.0L in the CTS-V and the C6 Corvette launched with 6.0L and quickly added the 6.2L. So it's possible to add or replace an engine mid cycle.

The CTS-V and SSR switching from 5.7 to 6.0 we’re both an issue of 6.0 not being ready when the vehicle was ready, so 5.7 had to suffice for one year.

The whole 'underrated' is a myth. You're basing that on a 12-13% drivetrain loss, where no one actually knows what that number is or should be. SS Camaros have dynoed 410-415 stock. Does that mean they're also underrated and product 470-475hp instead of 455?
