I have a 2017 and it slams hard enough to sever a hand. Watching some vids I figured that's just the way they are, they all look like they slam.

Heard back from the Chevy parts department. GM no longer sells the original part number strut for my car. I’d have to order from the GM Vintage warehouse.

The annoying part is they are issuing me a refund minus the original shipping amount and with a 10% restock fee even though I sent pictures showing it’s clearly not compatible.

You can probably find very similar struts at an online vendor like this:
https://www.liftsupportsdepot.com/

You need to know the:
end design
force in newtons
strut diameter
rod diameter
compressed length
extended length

You can increase the force rating for softer close.
The pictures in this thread show GM struts with some of the specs printed on them. Easy enough to measure everything but the force if you have an old one.

I want my trunk lid to be heavy, I don’t want the hooker jumping out.

i had that issue, adjusted the trunk latch, removed the back panel and loose the nuts to move the latch up or down

Curious but how does the latch affect the speed at which the lid closes?

Check at Rock Auto for the struts. They have several brands.
