They're both open. The LT1 variant seals better against the hood, because the SS has an extra (felt) hood liner. In fact, I can see the indentation the Roto-Fab's top rubber strip made against the hood liner, it's one continuous groove, indicating a near perfect seal.

Zl1 and ss rotofab look completely different. Rotofab on the ss in a box, open at top and to the front duct. Zl1 roto is only shielded by basically 2 corner plates

The ZL1 you're looking at is the "Big Gulp" version that works with the 103mm TB. I think.
