The thief said in the video, GM was the easiest to steal. He's right because they haven't done enough to stay current in this area.
OBDII - Security Attention for Automotive

"As connectivity in vehicles is increasing, related parties (e.g., regulators and car makers) need to pay attention to every source of connection, as they could potentially open a multitude of remote attacks on vehicles. Since an OBDII system is necessary for vehicle health, passenger safety and sustainability, it is critical for manufacturers to ensure the security of this system."

I may be overly cynical but I'm thinking this video was staged. Sure, the info is legit but I have a hard time believing some of the storyline. Thief has a "come to Jesus moment" and tells all of his secrets? Then at the end he's now running from the law and can't be contacted? BS detector going off, but as I mentioned the INFO was good. I had no idea the identity of the vehicle could be changed so easily and the car resold. As if I wasn't paranoid enough already LOL! Time to install our own homemade anti-theft devices 'cuz gm ain't gonna come to our rescue and even if they come up with a "fix" it will probably be woefully inadequate and easily defeated by another method.

Thing I dont get is in any metro area, there are traffic cams on all sorts of intersections. It seems it wouldnt be difficult to narrow down the search area for a stolen car almost immediately if this technology was leveraged.

It’s not seen as a major crime so cops/townships aren’t going to waste their time trying to recover the average persons car. The only way the cops will actually come out is if you track your car yourself and call them and tell them that you found it and ask them to help retrieve it. Even then they’ll only help you retrieve it if you tell them you’re going to do it yourself with or without their help.
