i had this same problem. turns out if you run out 3rd gear while not paying attention to your rpms... you float valves and bend them. simple compression test showed it. im on a stock engine with a tune so i just replaced the head from GM. it was $348 with new valves in it. i damn near got 2 more just to have but figured i would hold off on it. head gasket set, new bolts and 4 hours in the shop with a friend and its all back to normal.
