I don't understand why GM decided to use this dip stick. What was wrong with the tried and true old one?

I check mine like Canadian ZL1 does and haven’t had any problem seeing the level on the dipstick. It’s not rocket science folks!

Like what the others have mentioned reading the dip stick sucks because it doesn't instill confidence you are getting an accurate reading. I always check oil level next day without starting the car. For the most part I am satisfied with the reading as I check it 2 or 3 times just to make sure it shows the same result.
That’s a dipstick cover, for the handle I’m assuming. How does that help improve the accuracy of the reading ?

Correct...I was just pointing out Phastek does not have the actual dip stick.

Braided cable and a couple of plastic components probably saved GM lots of money across all platforms.

I like it when my neighbor comes over to ask me why it looks like I’m starting a lawn mower after an oil change. I’m sure it looks that way with the amount of times I like to confirm the oil level.
