Crushed pipes are for clearance. Remember under heavy accel and decel the exhaust system moves a lot more than you think. It also helps reduce drone as the sound reflections are different.

Some say the crush is due to the convertible models x brace. If that is the case I think cost is the biggest factor with the crushed pipe. My coupe needs no extra clearance in that area but clearly one exhaust was made for all models. This was a cost conscious decision by GM and not a sound or performance design in my opinion.
