Yes, there is a rubber cover that sits on top of the charging pad - looks like this

You can charge while the phone is vertical or learning on an angle. This gives you much more flexibility in phone sizes without really impacting convenience (it's almost definitely more convenient than laying flat).

I made a vertical pocket out of some fiberglass for my phone. Adding wireless charging to the pocket would be trivial. Then it would fit any phone without risking it falling out.
I agree that horizontal isn't the best idea given the wide variance in cell phone sizes (and the constant growth thereof), but falling out isn't really a concern on the street. My samsung stays put on the rubber pad no matter what, and it doesn't even fit perfectly, it's about a millimeter or two too wide. Tested this at 0.9 g lateral acceleration.

lol you’re angry

It’s Apple’s fault the iPhones are Qi complaint. It’s not GM’s. With that being said, there is a charging pad that works with the iPhones but your XS Max may not physically fit in the cradle. Removing the rubber mat will probably cause your phone to shift during driving and end up on the floor in the back (terrible location for a charger without wireless carplay)

Interesting stuff. I have a semi-related question.

I do use carplay and such with cable. However what I would really like - and what would be really handy is to have a portable battery pack that would charge wirelessly in the charging tray.

Like a lot of folks my iphone battery life get's sucked up pretty quick and i do have a Mophie case - and I have a portable batteries for recharging small devices sprinkled about.

Has anyone heard of a portable battery pack that you charge wirelessly? I've looked but have not found anything.

If the 7+ is the same size as the 8+ you’re going to have some issues getting it to fit.

Wait it’s apples fault for using a standard wireless charging protocol instead of GM’s who went cheap and didn’t?

Try wait brah... You're telling me that there is a phone charging dock in these cars?

Someone is probably going to try to convince me that there is a stereo somewhere in these things too. Jk.

You gotta familiarize yourself with the technology timeframes a bit more before jumping to that ridiculous conclusion.

There were competing wireless charging standards since its inception. GM tried to take the approach of using a pad that works with most, regardless of the standard because had they gonna all in on Qi, a lot of other cellular devices would not have wirelessly charged.

Qi emerged as the dominant standard in late 2016/early 2017 when no new devices used Rezence or PMA.

Apple decided to adopt Qi in 2017. With Qi now being the industry recognized standard the pads can now be updated or Apple could’ve taken the approach of other manufacturers and allowed their devices to charge with non-Qi certified chargers at the lower power rate that all the other OEMs allow.
