I see the holes in the outside tread block grooves, are those used as a tread life indicator similar to what a slick would have?

They are best on track when at the wear bars

Resurrecting this old thread...

Got a nail in my tire and went to America's Tire to get it fixed. The tech there used the laser measurement tool and said the tread depth on all 4 tires is at 2/32 so it couldn't be patched.
I put new tires on earlier this year and only have about 5000 miles on them. 1 track day and mostly weekend canyon runs. Don't really use it to commute.

Before I go ahead and change all tires I wanted to check if there is a specific way I should be measuring this? With most folks getting ~10000 miles on average out of a set of the Supercar 3's, this wear rate seems abnormal. Am I missing something?

They're applying the industry standard to doing a patch. I'd take it elsewhere for a second opinion. Remember that they're in the tire selling business(!), but don't want to be held liable for going against the standard. Try a smaller or less nationally known place.

First of all, those tires are fine until they cord. Meaning pretty much zero tread. Fine for track duty, BUT they would provide zero wet weather capability - obviously.

I would not compare somebody getting 10k miles vs you getting 5k. Your mileage might actually be very good if you do not daily yours and instead do canyon runs every weekend.
When comparing mileage you must look at apples to apples.

For example, i could have only 2k miles on mine, but 6-7 track days (roughly 6x2hrs) and they might be trash.

Hope it helps. Cheers!

Every town has a tire place that will patch any tire you bring them. You just have to do the legwork and find it. Look for independent places, usually the dicier the neighborhood the better. Seriously. I found a place in Pontiac Michigan that even patched a nail in a sidewall on an old pickup truck I had. Never had a problem with it either, but I never took it to the track...

They aren't actually terrible in the wet either. You obviously have to worry about any sort of hydroplaning because once that happens everything goes out the window. But I tracked my tires in the rain at VIR while they were corded and they did great.

I would also add, for track use you want a 1 piece plug/patch combo for peace of mind or a patch at minimum. Both require dismounting the tire. I would not take the chance of tracking on a tire that was repaired with a plug installed from the outside. I found a small independent tire shop that only did repairs using that method while I was on a trip which is probably fine for street use but it is meant to be temporary if you read the instructions on the package of the DIY plug kits.

you never want to track/race a plug but plug's too had been the standard repair for decades or a century until they came up with patching the inside which I agree 10000% is superior. But a plug should do you just fine for normal street use. And a patch is under $20, too.

Totally agree and have also experienced less than ideal tread levels on a wet track without tons of drama. But it also depends on drainage, pavement type and of course: pace Albeit, would not recommend street driving without tread, as it would be impossible to get sufficient heat into them, not to mention hydroplaning issue with much standing water. Cheers!

Thank you all for the quick responses! Very helpful!!
Looks like I'll be heading to a smaller shop to get this taken care of.
From this experience, the tire warranty on our tires seem useless (due to the 2/32 requirement) unless something happens as soon as you mount new tires!

lol
Tread depth has nothing to do with an internal patch.

Just wanted to report back - patch has held up so far with a little bit of street driving and 1 track day (5x 20 minute sessions)
