As much as I love the Z/28, this is the 6th gen fastest times list.

I forgot to post this on here back when I uploaded it to YouTube. It was the first stop on my track road trip earlier this year. I still have videos to edit and upload from 4 more tracks on the trip that I visited for the first time. Hopefully I will get around to it before my next planned track day at MSR Houston at the end of January.

Track (which config if applicable) = Daytona 24h Config
Elapsed Time (please include times to the hundredth if possible) = 2:07.38
Year / Model / Trim / Transmission = 2017 1SS 1LE 6MT
Date = 5/5/2022
Tires = OEM Goodyear Supercar 3
Mods = Track alignment with front strut mod (camber: -2.8° front, -1.4° rear, toe: 0° front, +0.05° rear per side [+0.10° total rear toe]), BMR BK063 Rear Diff Cradle Bushing Lockout Kit, Castrol SRF DOT 4 brake fluid, stock Brembo (Ferodo HP1000/1) brake pads, GM plastic track brake cooling deflectors, GM smaller metal track splash shields. Traction/stability control fully disabled, track mode with touring steering mode.

2:07.38 - cdrptrks in '17 SS 1LE on 5/5/2022, OEM SC3, Track alignment with front strut mod, BMR BK063 Diff Lockout Kit, Castrol SRF brake fluid, GM track brake cooling kit Video

It was a surreal experience to drive Daytona after watching parts of the Rolex 24 and Nascar Cup races held there on TV in the past! The banking is an unbelievable sight in person! I definitely recommend adding this track to your bucket list, although I would recommend an organizer other than Track Night if possible due to a lot of avoidable annoyances at this event which did not happen at the other Track Night events I have attended at 7 other tracks.

I'm happy with my lap time especially since it was only my first day (3rd session) at Daytona and it was 85°F outside and it was consistently hard to complete full laps without getting held up by slow and/or oblivious drivers in the advanced group which should not have been the case. I was surprised by the 15mph headwind gusting to 26mph at the finish line on the second day that prevented me from setting a faster lap and reduced my top speed by about 3-5mph (or by only 1mph the one lap I drafted another car all of the way from bus stop to turn 1).

I also had a near miss with a tire wall after distracting myself by looking out the window too late and for too long at a C8 Corvette that drag raced me all of the way to the next corner after giving me a point by at the start of the straight which is against the rules. This is a great example of the saying that the turn after a pass is the most dangerous one.

I had a memorable weekend at COTA last month to wrap up a year where I visited an excessive number of tracks! I came down with the flu less than 2 days before the event and was in bed for a good chunk of the day before with a 101°F fever! I went not knowing if I would even feel well enough to drive on track but thankfully I was not even aware of being sick while on track although I got a sinus infection and unsurprisingly it took me a long time to recover afterwards, probably because of attending the event. I would definitely recommend getting a flu shot this year...wish I would have planned to do it sooner!

It was about 25°F colder than average over the weekend with the temperature around 45°F on Sunday which was great for fast laps but unfortunately there was significant rain during all of the sessions for my run group on Saturday so I only got 2 dry days instead of 3. It was actually snowing about 3 hours away from the track on Saturday!

Track (which config if applicable) = COTA
Elapsed Time (please include times to the hundredth if possible) = 2:30.59
Year / Model / Trim / Transmission = 2017 1SS 1LE 6MT
Date = 11/20/2022
Tires = OEM Goodyear Supercar 3
Mods = Track alignment with front strut mod (camber: -2.8° front, -1.6° rear, toe: 0° front, -0.05° rear per side [-0.10° total rear toe]), BMR BK063 Rear Diff Cradle Bushing Lockout Kit, FEA front lower front control arms from ZL1 1LE (since stock fluid filled bushings leaked), 2021 SS 1LE ABS control module (EBCM) to get better ice mode calibration (found on 2019+ SS 1LEs) which prevents intermittent hard brake pedal and reduced stopping force in bumpy braking zones (probably didn't make a difference at COTA), Castrol SRF DOT 4 brake fluid, stock Brembo (Ferodo HP1000/1) brake pads, GM plastic track brake cooling deflectors, GM smaller metal track splash shields. Traction/stability control fully disabled, track mode with touring steering mode.

I shaved over 7 seconds off of my previous personal best from the last time I visited COTA 3 years ago and went faster than I thought was possible! I guess my skills have improved since then plus it was a sunny 99°F day last time so I had a good advantage just from better weather this time.

This was a decent lap but there were some mistakes. I think I could have gotten into the 2:29s with another session on these tires but I opted to switch to my SC3R tires after this session...

Track (which config if applicable) = COTA
Elapsed Time (please include times to the hundredth if possible) = 2:27.58
Year / Model / Trim / Transmission = 2017 1SS 1LE 6MT

Tires = Goodyear Supercar 3R on ZLE Wheels
Mods = Track alignment with front strut mod (camber: -2.8° front, -1.6° rear, toe: 0° front, -0.05° rear per side [-0.10° total rear toe]), BMR BK063 Rear Diff Cradle Bushing Lockout Kit, FEA front lower front control arms from ZL1 1LE (since stock fluid filled bushings leaked), 2021 SS 1LE ABS control module (EBCM) to get better ice mode calibration (found on 2019+ SS 1LEs) which prevents intermittent hard brake pedal and reduced stopping force in bumpy braking zones (probably didn't make a difference at COTA), Castrol SRF DOT 4 brake fluid, stock Brembo (Ferodo HP1000/1) brake pads, GM plastic track brake cooling deflectors, GM smaller metal track splash shields. I surprised myself with this one. Going into the weekend I didn't think this fast of a lap was possible for my car since I have stock horsepower, stock brake pads and rotors (I would not recommend this for SC3Rs), stock aero, stock 3 point seatbelts (with Simpson Hybrid S for added safety), stock Recaro seats, stock magride shocks, stock sway bars (probably not ideal for SC3Rs), and less than optimal camber for SC3Rs. Thanks to jeremy71 for helping me out with some remote coaching during the weekend! Note: the SC3Rs are sketchy for the first few laps in cold temperatures even in PTM Dry!

I am definitely proud of this lap. I think I could have even gotten into the 2:26s with another session on these tires and I included links to some better sectors in the video description which would have brought the optimal lap time down to 2:26.64 according to deltas in Cosworth Toolbox. There were also some corners where I think I could have carried more minimum speed like turns 8 & 11. I don't have as good of a feel for SC3Rs as I do for SC3s since I use them less often. The % lap time improvement at COTA was about average for the 5 tracks where I have used both tires but COTA is the longest and most difficult to string together a lap without major mistakes or catching traffic.

Austin Schnell Fest puts on good events at COTA (jointly organized by PCA & BMW-CCA) open to all car makes and there were not many cars in the advanced run groups but Intermediate had a lot of cars signed up except for Friday.

All times updated, nice job keeping it off the tire wall there. That is a tricky corner to take form the inside.
