As a newer driver aswell with only a few events under my belt I have some genuine interest in what you said.

Do you not use the active rev match to shift to 4th and then 3rd while maintaining steady brake pressure? Do you only use brake and shift only to the intended gear of the corner?

Good question and there are 2 schools of thought here and IMO it depends on how the track/corners flow. Having said that, I find that most of the shifting on majority of tracks is 1 gear down for a given corner. Especially for a torquey motor like ours And yes, I do use rev match and love it, albeit I have h+t'ed for many yrs. And even managed a spectacular and instant spin once at 85 when I didn't blip enuf and locked up the rears.
I can tell ya it got my attention to proper technique in a big hurry lol!

Thinking about it I'm only using engine braking at all coming down the front straight. You come off of turn 10 at Summit at 75-80 and make 140 down the straight before you have to haul it down to ~48mph to make turn 1. I'm all the way up in 5th coming down and skipping 4th to go to third in the downshift.

With Active rev match it's easy to downshift without removing brake pressure, but if you are already at threshold (which means some slip already) then adding engine braking means you MAY have to slightly adjust (but only if the computer isn't perfect as the brakes are slowing down the engine mechanically far more than the engine is slowing down the car). If you are just using ABS as your braking method, then the computer will do everything for you.

Without active rev match, I prefer to downshift to the desired gear and blip at the end of the brake zone then transition to trail braking. Just get the RPMs right when you release the clutch or you will have another variable in your corner entry that time...

Either way, your brakes don't need the engine's assistance to slow down a modern vehicle. The engine can assist the brakes slightly to very very slightly reduce brake use.. but that was only really required back when brake systems were not that great.

I did make it. I'm not sure if I saw you or not.

Videos are messed up so not sure what approx lap times I was running. Only one car passed me in white until I switched to crappy street tires (started to cord the cup2's) and it was a Gen6 ZL1.

I forgot just how slow PCA white (ex-yellow) group is around here. Great group of people, just not as fast as Chin.. and the cones they setup this weekend in T17... ugh.

Just home from VIR. Here is my '17 SS 1LE running 295 square RE71R's on the OE wheels. It was my first time with the Camaro @ VIR, holy cow- the SS 1LE feels made for this track! 2:05.88 this lap, sloppy Oak Tree and time left on the table in south bend.

I just started my search for a GT3 Cup car today and this video made me change my mind. You just saved me $100k! Thank you!

On my third set on Day 1 I was crushing the brake zone and really impressed my instructor, a Corvette guy, with the Camaro's brakes. I could have pushed a lot harder on more runs but this was my first event with a much more capable car.

I do think that I left some time on the track getting on the the drag strip but earlier in the day a car lost traction and hit the wall. I think the best approach is to line up straight as you can at the tower turn leading to the drag strip. Back at the turn there's plenty of grip. The back end got a little loose especially early on the strip.

All that and I hate the drag strip part of the course, I want more twistys. On to the Arizona Motor Sports Park on 9 December.

That's why context is king, I agree with your decision to back off coming on to the straight. I can also imagine disconcerting to be crossing the drag lanes with varying levels of adhesion.

VIR is probably my favorite US track I’ve driven. Yes, have ZL1 1LE vids to share also. I’ll work on getting more vids uploaded tonight.

ZL1 1LE feels like a proper race car, the chassis and body control are astonishing. I didn’t get as much seat time in the ZL1 1LE as my brother and dad. I only drove it 2 times Friday, then once on Sunday. My best time was a 2:01, my brother who drove it more got a 1:59 on Friday, and had 1:58’s indicated, but traffic got in the way. The 3R Tires are a mixed bag for me- you have to install them like slicks and they do grip very well and last for a session, though their friction circle is edgier than I’d like. They still have plenty of life left, despite seeing double duty in both advanced and instructor run groups.

Ha, thanks. Yes, the SS 1LE is a VERY capable car.

Yep, I just got the RE71R vid up first because I know guys like you want street tire times! 2:02-mid (can't remember exact) on P-Zero take-off's (285/645 18). That was with traffic in NASCAR and never getting the most out of the car in the esses or south bend. I think a 2:01 is easily doable on P-Zeros. My car on P-Zero's @ VIR is something special. I didn't want to get out of the car. I'll post vids of the ZL1 and mine on slicks later this evening. I also took some in-car footage of the ZL1 1LE which I'll attempt to overlay with PDR (I know some guys have used race render I beleive.)
