Rear Differential Signs of Trouble
Got in the SS today for the first time in a while. My wife drives it on a daily basis and it's got almost 10,000 miles on it now. As I backed it out of the garage and turned into the street, I felt/heard a grinding sound and it felt like one of the rear tires was skidding a little. As I drove it I consciously did some slow hard left and hard right maneuvers and several times felt something just odd about how the weight transfer from side to side felt, and a few times got that rear tire skidding sound again at parking lot speeds.
Is this a sign of the differential problems I've read about some having? |

If the groan and frozen wheel happen more on cold, low speed right turns, it is the rear diff, many of us have had it happen. Dealer should easily find the TSB. They'll need to flush your pumpkin.

Change the differential fluid.

Change the diff fluid with Delco 75w-90...it will make it be better but it's never going to go completely away. On cold days, for the first couple turns, it will make noise.

Mine does exactly this, so it's good to know it's normal.

It's totally not normal. There's a TSB, and the dealer will flush and refill the diff to fix it. If it doesn't go away, they'll replace the diff. I just got mine back from the dealer on Friday for this same issue.

I heard this problem eventually comes back even after replacing the differential. Is this true? I am having the same issue, but I don't want to take it to the dealer just to have the issue happen again.

What choice do we have? I'm assuming that left unfixed it will just get worse until it lets go completely or grinds itself to pieces. If its a design issue across all units they'll have to come up with a permanent fix eventually! I hope!

It's not normal but I am not sure it's as big of deal that some make it out to be. The clutches are setup tight in the LSD and when cold you get a little noise on the first couple turns. Just warm it up before throwing it hard into turns and change the fluid regularly and it should be fine. If the diff made the noise all the time and did not go away, then I would be concerned. I am not saying it's right, but I can tell you the last place I want to take my car is the dealer unless absolutely necessary.
