Corvette Gets MRC Upgrades

Chevrolet Performance just introduced new performance calibrations for C7 Corvette models equipped with Magnetic Ride Control.
Announced at SEMA 2017, the rejigged settings include new Track modes that Chevy promises will deliver faster lap times to Z06 FE6 and FE7 owners. Additionally, 2014-16 Stingrays with Z51 features get new calibrations in Tour and Sport modes, ’16 Stingrays without the Z51 package get reworked Tour, Sport and Track modes, lastly, ’15-16 Z06 owners with or without the Z07 package get new calibrations in Tour, Sport and Track modes.
“These new calibrations leverage the latest tuning strategies of the Corvette development team to offer increased performance while improving ride quality,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “The result is a greater feeling of balance and more linear responses to driver inputs — changes you’ll feel and appreciate immediately.”
Allegedly, the new calibrations enabled the Z06 to claw out a 1-second improvement in lap times around GM’s 2.9-mile Milford Road Course.
The new calibrations will be available through Chevrolet dealers for $350 and require no hardware changes, techs will simply upload the new software to the vehicle and the factory warranty is not affected.

I just traded my 2017 grand sport for my 2018 SS1LE and the Camaro mag ride calibration is definitely better. The vettes getting an update is good. Also means eventually Camaro could get updated even further. Awesome!!

It's only available for 2014-2016 models. So I'm assuming the 2017-2018 have the updated settings. No need for us to get an update as there probably hasn't been one yet.

What made you change from the Grand Sport to the 1LE? Was it just to try something different? These two cars are my top 2 two choices right now for a replacement for my 5th gen 1LE. I'm curious about your opinion on about the differences in feel between the 2 cars in addition to your observed mag ride differences.

Regarding the updated C7 mag ride calibration I would probably get a DSC controller instead as I get the feeling the DSC will still feel better.

I just think it's great that GM is doing it, and $350 ain't bad. Maybe GM is listening finely.

Good question. In a general sense first let me say the C7 Grand Sport is amazing. C7 is the best corvette so far (owned a C5 Z06). It's a phenomenal car.

Important to note both the Grand Sport and my 1LE are my only car - daily drivers. I put 6600 miles on my GS in 6 months and I work from home 80%, so I definitely drove it.

So, why did I get rid of it?

Short version:
As a street car the 1LE is a lot less money for nearly the same performance, the same amount of fun, and a bit more comfort.

Long version:
It's too much race car for the street for the price (for me). If you have unlimited money go for it. I try to balance my spend with the return I'm getting. I felt like I was paying a lot of money for a car that was absolutely worth it, but not worth it given the way I was using it.

The GS is absolutely worth the money if you use it for a racecar or have a 2nd car and get to only drive it on fun roads. The 1LE is more comfortable on the street and nearly the same in terms of performance on the fun roads.

You can't safely approach the limits on the road with the GS so with the 1LE I still can't safely approach the limit, but it costs a LOT less for just as much fun!

I never tracked the GS and will probably not track the 1LE. I just love the connected feeling of the way the cars drive. The 1LE is just that much tighter than the SS and so very close to the GS that on the street you can't even get to the limit to find the difference.

I will also tell you that the GS gets a massive amount of attention. Sometimes you don't want that - you will ALWAYS be seen.

Yep this is because the latest calibrations on the Camaros were better than the vettes. Same goes for E-LSD calibrations on the ZL1's and SS 1LE.

Thanks so much for this detailed and interesting comparison!
I was at the exact same decision point: Go C7 GS (even thought about a Z51...) or 1LE and eventually decided 1LE - mainly because of budget constraints.
Your input is also encouraging to me, since I use the vehicle 90% on the streets as a DD and maybe 10% on "fun roads".
I therefore require comfort and also the option to take my two kids in the rear seats (something which isn't part of the C7 at all).
BtW: What differences are there between the GS and the Z51? I never got into the details of the "real world" differences in ride between both. Only seen the differences in Specs on paper...

I never drove the Z51 or regular C7 - I prefer the wide body of GS/Z06. The differences would likely come down to better/bigger wheels and tires as well as some different suspension - basically the GS is a Z06 without the LT4 supercharged engine.
