Owning 3 Camaro's, bad idea?
So I currently own a 99 Z28 I'm slowly restoring and DD a 2017 1LT V6 .. at times I have "considered" trading the 1LT for a 2SS but because I have the 99 Z28 I can't "quite" justify it.. yet I love the new 2SS.. Such a trade will make me take a huge hit on the 1LT V6 if I do it right now, although I'm paid well in advance on it (paid until June of next year and still slapping on the loan to kill the interest.) my car's value tanked almost $10,000 from MSRP .. I got it with rebates of about $3k meaning out the door paid right at $27k for it so I will eat about $7k and that just makes me cringe.
Another thing is.. ..I'm not really in "need" of a new car, this trade is purely for enjoyment only yet I still actually like my V6 as a DD, its peppy enough for fun, VERY cheap on fuel, and is ideally the perfect commuter sports car.. and my 99 Z28 needs work that I need to invest into..and havent yet.. Well.. The Chevrolet dealer I got my car from called me and told me they're having rebates on the Camaro's at the end of this year and they can trade me out no money down (I recognize this is all dealer talk) then the bug bit and I imagined myself DD a Cyber Grey 2SS with a sunroof and.. I just can't help but desire that.. yet.. financially it's..not exactly a good move.. ..I was "thinking" of getting approved with my credit union and coming to Chevy with a check for about $35k and pointing out which one I want (if the rebates are any decent they will knock off $5k, can probably haggle another $5k if you have cash in hand.) and trade in the 1LT eating the depreciation on top of losing all of my advance payments. On the flip side, originally I was just going to pay off the 1LT V6 and keep it as a DD.. after its paid off, buy a 2SS as another toy to go along with my 99 Z28... Opinions? |

If you had the 2SS I can't imagine you'd bother driving the 1LT ever again. Maybe you would if they had different transmissions, but I'd still imagine it's unlikely.
You could supercharge the 1LT to get it up to SS power levels, but that'd blow the $7k you would have lost upgrading the car anyway, and you'll come out no better in terms of performance, and will have lost your warranty. I haven't driven the 1LT so can't compare, but I did trade my 2015 Dodge Charger R/T Road and Track for my 2016 Camaro 2SS, losing $10k in the process, so I had a similar experience. The Dodge was a nice car but it was an auto and had an open diff and not quite the pace I wanted. For me, taking the hit was worth it, but I'm very much a "driver", and by no means took the "sensible" option. Where the Charger was a good car, the 2SS is a great car. I can't think of anything in the same price range I'd rather have. |

I have thought about upgrading to a ZL1 from a 2SS, thanks to the people on this forum. Even had a couple picked out, but I finally realized since I don't track and I can not reach the full potential of the car I already have on public streets, what is the point?

I have a 16 2SS that we drive all summer and my wife drives 60 miles round trip to work every day, and I just traded my 13 BMW 328ix for a 17 1LT V6 that I plan to drive daily year round. The BMW was a great car, but just uninspiring and not really fun to drive. I got a manual trans in the 1LT, and it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it! Not nearly the level of car that the BMW was but I prefer it! I see no problem with owning as many Camaros as you can afford and want! My SS has a totally different personality than the LT, enough so that driving them back to back you’d never really feel like they were related!

Nope, no problems at all aside from multiple maintenance windows and repairs and parts and insurance and fuel and... and...

Here's the real answer:
You don't obtain financial freedom by tying your income up in financed vehicles. If it isn't a need, don't do it. Don't roll negative equity, etc, etc. Keep enjoying the toys you have and invest that extra cash into mutual funds, etfs, etc. |
