Winterizing Car

Hello,

With my other gen 5 I removed the battery and hooked it up to a trickle charger/maintainer. It only charges when it needs to.

With the garbage placement of the battery on this vehicle do you guys just hook the charger up to the "jump start" locations under the hood or do you peel back the trunk liner and hook it up to the battery there?

Winter here is 6 months minimum, I feel that is too long to leave the battery unattended.

Wouldn't just starting your car once a week take away that necessity of removing the battery?

Remember to add antifreeze to the Windshield Washer and pump it up to the nozzles.

Btw, Most Tire Manufactures do not recommend any "R" Compound Tires stored below 32 degrees as it breaks the rubber composition down and will also cause cracking.

I connect my trickle charger to the "jump start" location under the hood. Then I feed the line up through the hood vent, and wrap it with a microfiber towel so it does not scratch the hood, then place my Camaro "Fifty" Cover over it.

No need to remove the battery. Hook your charger up under the hood. You bypass the RVC system when you go directly to the battery. Your probably better off not starting the vehicle at all. You can create moisture inside the engine if you are not getting to full operating temps. This is not good for the oil as it can turn acidic. I would also do a fresh oil change before storing it for winter.

Here's some advice from a Gen 5 owner. I've been storing my Camaro for 6 months every winter since 2010:

Change the oil and filter.

Put a bottle of sta-bil in the tank before your last fill-up. Drive for 15 minutes or so to get the treated gas through the system.

Connect the battery tender to the terminals under the hood. Do not remove or disconnect the battery.

Pump the tires up to 40 psi. Don't worry about flat spotting though; it's a myth from the old days. Any flat spotting will go away after driving a short distance come Spring.

Do not put mothballs in your car; they stink. Do call professional pest control to place pet-safe containers of poison in all four corners of the garage.

Do not start the car periodically during storage. All this does is fill the exhaust and crank case with condensation.

By far the worst possible thing You can do to a car in storage! Hook the battery tender up and let the car sit.

That’s the worst thing you can do unless you are willing to thoroughly warm the car to operating condition. I hope up my maintainer under the hood to the jump start points. Worked for 4 months last winter.

The garage will be below 40F during the winter. It is "heated" but it is usually around 5. I don't plan on tracking it and I will lose storage insurance if the car is "not on all 4 wheels"

What is "storage insurance"? No storage facility that I know of assumes liability. You have to provide the insurance.

Storage insurance in Michigan means it will sit in my garage for 6 months and I call my insurance company and tell them it is not going to be driven during the winter until mid April sometime. They then remove coverage such as collision, etc. Car is no longer legal to drive until I call them in the spring to re-instate full coverage.

Storage insurance is void in my province if the vehicle is , on blocks, or a hoist. it must rest on all 4 wheels for the duration of storage.
