When I upgraded from a Camaro V6 to a V8 my insurance went up $5 a month.

only you know if its financially prudent to get the v8 over the 6.if you are going to drive it like you stole it and race off every light you need the v8,but if you are over that the 6 is a damn good motor, and cost of ownership should be slightly less.

Dredging this up since I'm struggling with the issue the OP brought up. I'm hoping you all here can check my homework.
Daily driving v6 pros: With regular $2.65 vs premium $3.35 in my area, If i assume no mpg difference a v6 1le will save me ~$370 a year over a ss, which isn't a lot, but in think notable if you're adding up everything. Harder to get into trouble as it's not as fast. Daily driving v8 pros: Really doesn't need an explanation, it's a 445hp v8, and sounds awesome! Consumables of tracking a v6 1le vs 1ss: I briefly searched , and it looks like front pads and rotors for the v6 1le vs 1ss are the same or very similar, on rockauto there's a Track Day kit for ~$220 for front rotors and pads. Or course a 1ss will go through them faster, but i really don't know how much faster. And for tires, i'm not sure what's the best way to go. I currently have a dedicated square setup for my bimmer, and really like that, i see on the forum some of you all have gone that way. I figure a square setup is at least $2200 (~$300tire ~$250wheel). Just guessing the v6 might be 20% less on consumables? Trackday enjoyment/learning v6 1le vs 1ss: I'm an intermediate, so i'm concerned the 1ss it too much car to enjoy, while the v6 1le might be just right. My current car is fairly slow, and i think is a good learning tool. There are sections of my home track (njmp Thunderbolt) where i don't have to lift, giving me very consistent speeds to work on my entry speed estimation into a couple sharper turns. In the most intensive braking into T1 i'm used to slowing from 115mph to ~70. With an ss i'm likely at >130, and somewhere in between for the v6. And once i'm in a turn, getting back on the gas, i think the v6 1le would be more forgiving, although i'm read the ss is forgiving too. Last edited by Hops; 10-04-2017 at 10:42 PM. OP - My decision to get a 1SS 1LE was based on what car would be a good replacement for my heavily modded G8. I test drove a 1LE and determined it was everything I wanted my G8 to be, out of the box with a warranty. Although I miss my G8 this Camaro is the nicest best handling car I have ever owned!
My thought process has always been to get the best you can afford at the time you are considering a purchase because something better will always come along. If you go with the 1SS I doubt you will be asking yourself "what if"? |

I was in the same boat last month. I couldn't find a 2017 V6 1LE in Nightfall. I have a 11 supercharged Jeep wrangler on 37's that was my DD so I needed something more fuel efficient. The 1SS still used 91 fuel (same as Jeep) so convincing the wife was not going to happen that I would same money on fuel.
I ended up with a 18 1LT RS NPP in NFG and in the 1400 miles driven I'm averaging 27mpg with a best of 35.7mpg (Jeeps gets 15 if I'm lucky). Adding the Camaro to my policy added 70mo (1SS would have been 85mo) but I also have 4 other cars on my policy so... The V6 has plenty of power for me to get in trouble with and nothing of mine ever stays stock so....I will enjoy the V6 until it's time for the V8(or I get rid of the wife...lol) |
