iPhones are notorious for causing inexplicable brake failure. If you can prove your smartphone--or other electronic device(s)--rendered your braking system inoperable, you may be entitled to a cash settlement and sympathy from other responsible drivers.

In all seriousness, enjoy the rental car and the subsequent 2014 Toyota Corolla, featuring cold A/C, 15 inch wheels, and 195/65 Yokohama all-season tires.

Bummer on the crash, yes the car kept you safe. Your description is textbook "stop and go" traffic that's caused by resonances in traffic following, an accordion effect. If you ever have to come to a complete stop on an Interstate, you can be damn sure there will be another to follow. Chill out and let the accordion settle down in front of you, or you'll repeat this.

Read this research study conclusion.

Something I find interesting is the impact was fully above the crash beam. All these big SUV's and trucks with their ass high in the air leave no place for forces to intentionally dissipate in a crash. Theoretically it would be better to standardize a crash beam height, front and rear, but I fear it would result in everything being Tahoe height, and I definitely don't want that.

Agreed with the above, but lets just face it, sh*t happens and people make mistakes.. No one sane INTENDS to have an automobile accident, and any one of us regardless of how good of drivers we are, can go out and have an automobile accident by simply slipping up on something we would commonly do.. Driving is dangerous, it's no wonder its one of the leading causes of death in America.

I'm normally a very attentful driver, I check everything, blind spots, look both ways when the light changes green to avoid red light runners (this has saved me twice) checking UNDER uncoming traffic vehicle to make sure noone from the left is making a left turn into me, ect ect.. but one day I was in a rush to work.. no cell phone involved..I had decent clearance with the car infront of me as well, I looked up to check far ahead down the road to see what traffic was doing and they were moving, then I looked down and I'm plowing RIGHT into a car that slammed on his breaks... there was no sign of any of that right before either.. sometimes..its easy to just..f*ck up.

Harsh man... ...in seriousness..I believe he will still come out okay, Insurance companies will usually forgive the first wreck, meaning his rates will not increase... he may need a down payment though.
