If you take your dog, do you secure them?

I posted this picture of my dog in a different thread and received the following comment. (I promise not to post this picture in any other thread.)

I don't really disagree with it but I am wondering what others think. Below is my response.

My dog is wearing an anchor to the seat belt attached to his collar. My thought was to keep him from being able to jump out of the convertible. He is a small puppy so I was thinking in an accident he would be thrown about 18 inches into the back of the front seats or the middle part of the hammock. In a rear end accident he would be thrown about 12 inches into the front of the back seats. If we roll over we are both hosed anyway.

I had a harness for my prior dog but she didn't really like when I put it on. I either didn't take her or I would just attach the seat belt anchor to her collar so she didn't jump.

I guess my question is, do most people drive with their dogs restrained? I am pretty over protective of Finley but I thought that the hammock and the seat belt attached to the collar were reasonable.

What do others think?

Nice dog, it's your dog and car. Your not breaking any laws and for what you have said it seems pretty reasonable.

Some People and the State try to impose their suffocating ways Enjoy life and just be careful with dog in car, pedal to the medal by yourself.

Mine freely roam in the back seat. Not saying it's smart, it's not, it's just what I do.

Skimming a couple videos, it's apparent that if you want the harness to work, you gotta get a crash test proven one. That said, that keeps the dog from becoming a missile/projectile but will it keep the dog safe/healthy? Not sure.

I would go with a harness vs collar...Collar almost certain a broken neck, harness much less injury...But I don't let my dog in my car, he has the 2nd seat of my Expedition...

The harnesses are less about protecting the dog and more about preventing it from becoming a large projectile in the event of a heavy accident.

I love my labradors but honestly I love my kids, wife and myself more, so the dogs are securely harnessed in when we travel to stop them becoming missives in an accident.

Hate to say that about the dogs, but if I had to choose their life or mine then it's a no brainer.

Comments not meant to offend anyone and I have 2 x 100lb dogs and young kids, so the math is probably different for me than those with smaller dogs and no kids

We travel a lot with our two dogs for AKC championship competition (dog and bitch technically ). That community stresses that they be in travel crates to prevent injury or wandering into traffic if there was a bad crash.

Not possible in the Camaro so I would go for the harness instead of collar to lessen the chance of injury. Your guy looks young so he will accept it as normal if you're consistent.

I'm guilty of having them on a lead in my Camaro but its only been three times for vet appointments where my wife's SUV wasn't available. We have harnesses so I'll take my own advice and do that in the future

I had a friend who back in the late 90s bought a pit bull and decided to tie it with rope to the bed of his Dodge Ram pick up. About 5 miles into his drive back home, he decided to look at his rear view mirror. Needless to say, there was almost nothing left on the other end of the rope. What an idiot!! That was my first thought. Not a friend of mine since.

in a wreck with the leash your going to snap your dogs neck with the collar. It's best to get a harness and a restraint so that they 1) are safer in the event of a wreck and 2) don't become a missile in the event of a wreck. It definitely is safest to harness them in, but it's your dog, you can do whatever you feel is necessary.

My dog usually wears the factory belt when she's driving.

She never road in the camaro. In the jeep she wanders around the cab. No leash or restraints.
