First time out with the Headers, new personal best

Very long read, so skip to the slip if you don't want to read all of this. I just like to give as much information as possible, whether it's a fast or slow car, good or bad night at the track, etc. so anyone else can learn, replicate, or improve on what I did. I also loving getting insight back from those who have been in my position.

Finally got to hit the track with my headers installed for the first time. The air happened to be pretty good, so the turnout was pretty large. A bunch of breakdowns, spills, and a Hellcat losing it's driveshaft meant I was only going to get a few passes...4 to be exact.

My old bests were:
Stock - 11.995 @ 117.72 (-342 DA)
Stock with CAI intake - 11.919 @ 117.82 (same day, -211 DA)

Car is an 8 speed auto. Mods are:
-Cold Air Inductions intake
-Texas Speed 2" longtubes and X-pipe (to NPP mufflers)
-DSX Flex Fuel kit (Ethanol content was showing 65% on the sensor in HPT)
-Tuned by DSX Tuning
-Still running the stock Goodyear run-flats
-100% full weight 2SS, half tank of gas

PASS #1
I wanted to be sure I started off the night with a solid pass since I knew I would only get a couple with the large turn out. Aired the tires down to 27 psi pre-burnout. I see people dropping them way down all the time crazy low like 20 psi on street tires...this is not going to help you. Street tires don't wrinkle, and run-flats will just sit on the sidewall as if there is a flat, so dropping too low is worthless on street tires (obviously drag radials/slicks is a different story).

Since I always see this question, for my burnout, I always go around the water box, back into it, spin the tires once over, then pull forward. I put it in manual mode, do a standing burnout, shifting to 2nd quick, then 3rd real quick, and let off the brake to do a quick 10ft rolling burnout to ensure they are clean. If you are doing a burnout longer than 5 seconds on street tires, or creating a huge smoke cloud, you are overheating them. Street tires just need a little heat and to be cleaned off.

Anyways, stalled the car up to about 1500 RPM with TCS/Stability completely off. I let off the brake and waited a fraction of a second before going WOT just to be sure I got out clean with no wheel hop or spin.

DA = 888
60' - 1.81
1/8 ET - 7.692
1/8 MPH - 92.83
1/4 ET - 11.857
1/4 MPH - 118.87

PASS #2
Didn't change tire pressure, or TC settings. I stalled it up to about 1700 RPM, and mashed it right away this time. I felt like the car short shifted first this time, and sometimes on the street it short shifts 2nd, so I thought, "I'm probably smarter/better than the car at this" and shifted the car myself for the 1-2 and 2-3. Nailed them perfect, then through it back in D for the rest of the pass....and it went slower. Moral of the story: let the car do it's thing.

DA = 634
60' - 1.75
1/8 ET - 7.743
1/8 MPH - 91.55
1/4 ET - 11.940
1/4 MPH - 118.22

PASS #3
Lesson learned from the last pass, this time I would be sure to let it shift on it's own. Didn't change TC or tire pressure still. This time there was a long wait in between passes (over an hour), so the car was very cool. The air got very good on this pass, so I was sure it would run it's balls off on this one...but it didn't for whatever reason. Stalled it up to 2000 RPM, mashed it right away, no spin, let the car shift itself, but didn't get the result I figured. I logged the pass so maybe there is some details there my tuner can check out, who knows.

DA = 75
60' - 1.75
1/8 ET - 7.710
1/8 MPH - 93.25
1/4 ET - 11.887
1/4 MPH - 117.72

PASS #4
I was annoyed with that last pass, and waiting in line, so I went to air up the tires and go home. My friend talked me into making 1 more pass since the line was a little shorter and the air was great, so I jumped back in line. I let the car cool off in line to get the intake temps down, but I've noticed the car seems to like to be running warmer, so I was aiming for low intake temps + warm coolant temps (just as an indicator of engine temp). Before I pulled into the burnout box, intake temps were around 120*. Replicated the same pass from #3, stalled to 2000, mashed it immediately. Air was obviously better, but the car made a much better pass for whatever reason. EDIT: Tires were on 32 psi for this pass. I aired them up to go home, but left them up to see what it did.

DA = -75
60' - 1.73
1/8 ET - 7.593
1/8 MPH - 93.93
1/4 ET - 11.732
1/4 MPH - 120.09

OF COURSE since this was my best pass, I accidentally clicked 2 pixels to the right in HP Tuners and closed the log of this run before. :( Oh well.

Overall, I'm pleased with my first outing. Logged the 3 other passes, so I have some data to send my tuner and see if we can do any tweaking. I also never got to just stab the throttle from idle, which is what the car liked best last season. Knowing I wasn't getting a lot of passes though, I didn't bother trying since it's also more likely to spin trying it that way. Next time I will be sure to try it though.

I'd like to get full E85 in the car just to see what it picks up, probably won't be much but I'll take every last hundredth. I plan on going back a few more times before the season is over, but I'm not sure if i'll keep going in this configuration or switch it up. I want to see what it does on 93 as well, and I have some drag radials waiting to be mounted...so we'll see. I probably have 2 months left of the season here at our track. I'm all about incremental gains, making only 1 or 2 small tweaks at a time to see what gains or doesn't anywhere, so I'm sure we'll find a few more tenths in the car somewhere.

That's pretty awesome for just doing some testing on stock street tires!!

Looking at your 11.91 time slip it looks like all nice gains

.10 quicker 60ft
.14 quicker 1/8 mile
1.7 mph gain 1/8 mile
.18 quicker 1/4 mile
2.27 mph gain 1/4 mile

Great Job!! Pray ported IM/TB should be on the list next!!!! I just installed it on my car which is 100% stock aside from this.... truly night and day difference!!

On the right track for sure.

I second a pray ported IM and TB as a next mod.

Do you have hptuners ? Ability to switch TM off and on? You'll 60ft harder with drag radials and TM off. Good for a couple tenth in the 1/4 on my car FYI

It's on my list, probably an over winter thing. I want to see where I can get it before doing anything else, but at the same time, I just want to see how fast it goes with bolt-ons so it might happen sooner if I get trigger happy.

As I said up there^, those mods are next on my list.

I have a HP Tuners Pro in the car since Dave (DSX) is down in Texas, so all my tuning is remote. I bought it for little things changes, switching tire height out and things like that. I am far from an expert in HPT, but I can navigate it alright. haven't screwed anything up so far. I planned on asking that question about the TM anyways, so we'll see where that goes.

I'm the same. Remote tuned hp tuners but know how to tweak things.

I run the same trans tune on the street as my race tune only difference is TM being on for the street. I've heard always running without TM can shorten transmission life so I leave it on when not at the track

Hey, thanks for posting all of the detailed info.

I'm pretty inexperienced at drag racing, but it is such an adrenaline rush, I plan on doing more. Recently went to Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk OH. I got one run in with a 12.546 @ 113.35 running rear tires at 25 PSI. I aired the tires back up to 33 PSI because I was getting ready to leave and didn't think there was time for a second run. Everything else was the same. I ran a 12.64x @ 113.25, so it seems to me airing them down a little does make a bit of a difference. My goal is to get into he high 11's with a few bolt-ons, like a CAI, and PRAY ported IM/TB, and possibly a tune.

Bill
