Disabling AFM - anyone tune it out?
Hi Everyone...I have an automatic 2017 50th 2SS and love everything about it...except AFM. I hate the shift to V4. I am close to buying a Diablosport I2030 to tune out the AFM and want to know if anyone has done it....does it work as advertised? I have tried the Range product and it didn't work for me (changed shift points and rev points....car didn't drive the same so I took it off and returned it). Please let me know what you think.
Thanks. |

Good question. I don't know about Diablo, but my tuner asked if I wanted mine deleted and he uses HPTuners. I decided NO, since I do take the car on long trips and love the 30+ MPG I get. I don't have all the performance I could have with it enabled, but that's the choice I made.

AFM is easy to tune out with HPT, also it makes little to no change in your gas mileage at all.

^This!
AFM does nothing for fuel mileage... I drive my A8 in manual mode and get the exact same mileage.

Turned it off on my Sierra over a year ago with no issues, and same gas mileage. I used a superchips tune.

AFM can still be active in manual mode. I did some experimenting and found out the key to keeping it off is to actually do a manual downshift while in manual mode. Simply letting the computer downshift, then you manually upshifting will still enable AFM. Not saying you still had AFM enabled, just for reference for anyone wondering.

I have found AFM to be completely transparent.

Wonder if its possible to have AFM on or off based on driving mode selected...say on for Tour...off for Sport and track...

AFM doesn't help with fuel economy on the highway? I thought it did by switching over to V4. I'm not talking about driving around town.

I have both.
Range turns off AFM, and DFCO. Meaning that when you deaccerate, your engine would try to maintain the engine RPM. Lots pf crackles from your exhaust. Diablo sports turns off AFM but leaves DFCO. So this actually save more fuel.

Honestly I'd question the actual way people claim it makes no difference. It would be great to have someone drive a 25 mile stretch with it off then back with it on (assuming no tail winds/major changes in elevation). I'd bet there would be a 1 or 2mpg difference. The problem with that of course is it not very realistic for anyone's driving situations. It probably doesn't really make a difference tank over tank in normal driving situations. But I would dare someone to beat the 36.6mpg (last 25mi) I got on the gauge as my current best without AFM.
