Crap I almost forgot about this and have a track day later this month. Subscribed.

Not to hijack but I think OP got the answer he was looking for. That said, I've never changed, or even seen brake fluid changed before. I'll find a YouTube video and be fine I'm sure. Anything to watch out for though?

2L should be needed for a home fluid change. Is it comfortably 2L or should I get 2.5L?

Based on the two most popular recommendations thus far, Motul 600 (not 660) and Castrol SRF that's a huge price difference. Motul comes in .5L bottles (so no less than 4 are needed at about $20) and Castrol comes in 1L bottles (no less than 2 are needed); so long as it's a comfortable 2L swap.

Do I have everything summed up correctly?

2 pints (though really is 500ml) not 2 liters. Both my Gen6 SS and Gen6 ZL1 use 2x of the .5L bottles per flush.

Motul 600 is great and cheaper than Castrol SRF, but you'll have to change it more quickly as it's higher hygroscopic.

You can switch up to Motul 660 if you'd like if you find you're getting pedal fade, but many find 600 to be fine.

Castrol has less tendency to absorb water, a higher temp when wet but also costs more.

I get away with 1L for a full flush (two 500mL bottles of Motul). 2L will be more than enough of a safety window. Just buy 2L and bring the unused fluid to the track in case you end up needing it.

Look into the Motiv Power Bleeder - convenient way to flush/bleed your own fluid if that's what you want to do.

And how often do these fluids need to be changed?

I do once a year, whether I feel it needs it or not.. Simply because Motul is always thirsty.

However, it will also depend on how much you track it and IF you happen to boil it, then you need to do a partial bleed and refill -- but, you don't have to burn a full flush.

The bolded part is important for 2 reasons offhand... One, you do indeed want additional fluids on hand at track days for yourself.. Just in case you need it.. You esp want to have at least 1 QT of the motor oil you're running to top off if it ingests. The additional brake fluid will allow you to do a small bleed and top off if you boil or feel there's air in the lines.

Also, secondarily, you never know when one of your track day peers just happens to need a little fluid.. I just had this happen to me last Monday.. A guy in the pits had that very scenario.. He did a quick bleed and needed to top off his reservoir and had just ran out of his stock. I offered up some of my spare stock and he was very grateful for it. This is how you make friends at the track and how you save them from not being able to run all day over something simple. Additionally, you never know when you'll need something yourself and someone else will sling you the same courtesy.

Great, thanks for the advice all. I'll buy 3x 500ml bottles just to have it (and hopefully not need it).

Anyone ever use one of these? https://www.amazon.com/HFS-Brake-Ble...=brake+bleeder

or

https://www.amazon.com/OURYES-Vacuum...=brake+bleeder

I saw the recommendation for Motiv as well. Seems to be a couple options but here's one? Is there a benefit to this one over the above? Doesn't seem to have as good of reviews (though there are a few Motive models available - so maybe this one had trouble).

I've never tried those vacuum hand bleeders so I can't comment on them. The speed shop that I go to also uses the Motiv pressure bleeder for their brake fluid jobs.

I don't think there's much in terms of options for the Motiv bleeder - it's a universal container/pump but the attachment cap needs to be specific to the car. I believe ours is the 1108 adapter. This should be the one you want for the kit: https://www.amazon.com/Motive-Produc...dp/B000TK9FE8/

I use the Motive and I LOVE it. Makes the job so easy.

Is Castrol SRF that much better? Why?

+1!

Some of the best times, and best friends, come from helping someone out with fluids, a tool, or heck, sometimes even a zip tie!!

Get 2L and carry the spares.

Another to consider is Wilwood EXP600. Great stuff.

I use Endless RF650. F1 teams use it. I bleed before every track day and get fresh fluid to the caliper. It has never let me down.

I have a friend that also has a track day coming up. He's been swamped with work and may not get a chance to change out stock fluid before the event. I'm thinking he may be OK with stock fluid in a novice group HPDE. Right?

Same with 5w30 oil?

Again, asking for a friend.
