I agree...that's what I was trying to show in me earlier post...

Yeah, it's done with a V-6 option...

http://www.chevrolet.com/byo-vc/clie.../camaro/config

2018 1LS...........$26,900

2018 1LS w/V6...$28,395

2018 1LS w/V8...$30,000-$32,000....????

2018 1SS...........$37,995

I would think there is plenty of wiggle room in between the 1SS (38K) and the 1LS (27K) for a much less expensive V8 option other than the 1SS.

The V-6 1LE is $32,895..., a $4,500 1LE option, which is basically an SS with V6....It takes another 5K to go to the 1SS price....

Leave it an LS, non 1LE, add 5K for the V8, and you're at $32K for a V-8 LS..

Simply using their own build site and option pricing, the V-8 seems to be an additional 5K only, if installed as an option to the LS....

The "V8 LS" should be doable at nearly 6K less than the base 1SS...

You also have to consider how many people went with a V6 because of price who may have went with a V8 if the price point with the RS as optional would be in their range. This would be in addition to that 20% who didn't go with the RS option. Also, would it bring any new customers to Camaro that didn't go Camaro because the V8 was out of their range and wouldn't go for anything less than V8. Just more considerations I think. I don't think it's simply the 20% argument.

I don't think anybody is going to want to buy a V8 and not get the SS badge. People care a lot about that stuff.

One major upside to this situation is that for the 6th gen, there's never been a badging distinction between 1SS and 2SS, so it's a lot easier to slip a new trim in under the SS moniker. Where-as the 5th 1SS got white badges and the 2SS got red., all 6th gen SS's have a red badge.

So for ordering purposes, they can call this trim level a 0SS and be done with it. It doesn't really matter beyond designating a trim package for those who are buying it. After that, it has the same badge as the rest. Don't overcomplicate it. :P

GM and the UAW need to become more fluid.

The idea that they cannot support the a la carte options people want is not exactly true... They don't want to do it.

Look at BMW's support with the Mini Cooper. They claim that there are over 10 million possible configurations when you use their website to build a car.

If you watched the special "Building Cars Live" from 2015 with James May that showed the entire process on the assembly line of building the car they ordered in real time, it wasn't any big deal for the people working the assembly line that every car was different due to how well they have JIT inventory delivery working in that factory.

If you google it and are interested you can find the show.

The only issue I see is that moving to that model would be an investment up front that would later save money and it looks like they are looking for a quick fix to pricing at the expense of keeping the cookie cutter car packages.

I think what you suggest would complicate it....lol....SS designates performance trim/package...RS designates options/equipment package...

This would be neither one...It would have none of the track-prepped, track goodies like the 1 or 2 SS...

V-8 does not necessarily mean SS, and would be a good fit to the LS option line-up....(Maybe just add a V-8 flag, if the buyer wants a "badge"...lol)...

No SS badge would just add to the "sleeper" mystique of a V-8 LS...Sort of like the 409 Biscayne I posted earlier...lol..

I don't think that's true at all then my 4th gen I had the Z28 and I was quite happy that I had that over an SS even though it was considered a lesser model it was a stripper and it was faster. I don't think the SS badge stands for much these days when you're slapping them on Cobalts and everything else. I think the strongest old-school name is definitely is Z28

Just an edit the throw myself into the boat of badges that don't mean anything I have an RS and that's on everything from the cruize to the Cavalier

I also don't know why we are focusing so much on the SS. The volume is in the 4 banger and V6. Making the V8 cheaper won't cause sales to jump 1000-3000 units. It may drive V6 buyers into the V8 model, but it won't cause a significant change in volume.

How bout we put in a 6 speed auto tranny instead of the A8? Much cheaper. I would rather have a 6 speed.

If you're talking an auto which you are it's probably not much cheaper than the 8-speed Auto if they wanted to make an absolutely cheap model they would have to take off the RS package the heavy-duty and cooling package throw some 18 inch tires on there and equip it with a 6-speed manual transmission then it could be a cheaper option maybe also have the 7-inch screen instead of the 8 inch you can throw on some crank windows and perhaps you can strip some of the nanny's away

0SS seems weird. Better to just leave off a number entirely - wasn't the early 5th gen V6 with steel wheels simply called LS, before they broke it out into 1LS & 2LS? I never liked that solution, having a whole trim set aside simply for a no- options model, then adding a 2 for no options except as automatic - still better to decontent the existing trim with the opportunity to add that content back in with options, in my opinion - but if you did do that it would be SS, 1SS, 2SS.

I do think there is a possibility if they offered a V-8 Camaro at a price point of around what the Challenger R/T sits at then you might grab customers from those cars who just want a V-8.

I think this is why the idea of putting the 5.3L in the Camaro seems like a great idea, me the only benefit I can see to doing this would be if it was essentially a V-6 Camaro but with a 5.3L in it. I think the concern here comes down to if the drivetrain can handle the torque of the 5.3L engine, if it can then this might be a great move. It would weigh in at about the same as the V-6 Camaro so around 3,500 pounds, I think if they could pull that off with a 380/380 5.3L engine and even undercut the Challenger R/T in price. If they made the 5.3L engine lets say a $3,000 price option over a standard V-6 Camaro then you would be looking at about $31,400 bucks.

With that amount of power in a vehicle of that mass it would easily out perform the Challenger R/T. Lets put mass at around 3,550 pounds of the V-8 LT Camaro, that would give a power to weight ratio of 9.3 pounds per horsepower. Compared to the Challenger R/T at 11.1 pounds per horsepower, in fact it wouldn't be too far behind the 392 Challenger in power to weight ratio. A Camaro almost as fast as a 392 Challenger for only lets say $32,000 might steal sales from the SS Camaro even. Some in the truck world are pushing these motors to nearly 500RWHP with head/cam/tune/headers etc... .

Honda builds cars with zero options. Trim levels determine the features on the car.

Toyota does something similar. They have option packages but those packages are bundled and pre-determined. You cannot order one in different option package configurations.

BMW does custom configurations. But since their cars are typically more expensive than direct competition they can absorb a little extra production cost.

Not sure why all the angst over SS. The last time GM put an SS badge on a non-performance model was the 2006 Malibu SS. That was 11 years ago. Cobalt SS and HHR SS, both gone since 2010, were both actually pretty decent performers, particularly in their vehicle classes. Both achieved 260 hp and 0-60 in just over 6s. Go back 7 years and that was pretty decent performance, especially for pocket rockets which they competed against. And faster than a lot of Gen 3 and Gen 4 Camaros.
