Take a 1LT Camaro and stuff SS running gear into it. No HID's, no digital reconfigurable dash, small touch screen, etc.

Call it the RS, rename option package on the V6/2T cars.

Agree. Blind spot monitor should be considered a safety item on any car/truck. GM holds it to high end packages on the C6 and their trucks. Same with HUD. Safety feature as it keeps your eyes up. Cannot get it on base 1SS. Have to go to 2SS.

This is about as open of an admission as you're likely to get. We all knew this was coming. I just can't understand what took so long.

Huh? Not sure where you're getting this from, but I see at least a $5k gap to close.

You're looking at a 2017 Mustang. 2018 Mustang GT is $35,000, but still $1K from his claim.

Makes sense. I recall the 2018's saw a price jump.

Still, plenty of brand-new 2017 GT's on dealer lots to be had for $32k, or even less as time goes on due to mark downs. As said, Chevy needs to at very least stabilize the cost of Camaro's across all trims and Ford will gradually supersede them if given time. But offering a $32k - $33k striper V8 on a Camaro is a smart move that would have a more immediate impact on sales. Especially since both cars are in the middle of their production run -- there's not exactly that much time for them to naturally close the price gap.

IMO, offering a car without the track ready features (summer tires, LSD, Brembo brakes) would devalue the SS line.

Devalue the SS line? You mean the line that Chevy just slaps on any and every vehicle in their lineup they can think of? There is nothing special about the SS designation anymore. It may have once held something back in the 70's, but now it's just a badge.

2018 Mustang GT starts at 36k.. 2018 Camaro 1SS starts at 38k.

Wrong. 35k without destination. It's a 36k car with destination, Ford often simply doesn't like to advertise destination cost which you're not going to avoid paying. Camaro 1SS with destination is 38k.

Imagine if V8 where as cheap as regular cars or a couple grand extra. Gas would be $6 gallon.

You are intentionally misinterpreting me, so let me make it crystal clear:

Leaving the track ready features off the Camaro SS would devalue the Camaro SS. We are talking about the Camaro SS here, so SS line means Camaro SS. Got that?

On another thought, offering leather on the 1SS would make a lot of folks happy.
