Hydroplaning on Stock Tires

Found myself needing to use the ZL1 to drive from the Houston area to Dallas this week (wife needed the truck).

The weather was stormy and on some of the poor asphalt backroads I was traveling there were areas where water was standing (1/2" deep I'd guess) due to the rain.

Got to say, I had the worst hydroplaning experiences of my life. The car was dangerous by anyone's standards at anything above 50 mph. Once I made it to the interstate, it was fine even at 75 mph... but the car is dangerous in standing water. The stock tires have about 3,100 miles on them and plenty of tread.

Not wanting to debate the issue or argue if there are better cars or worse ones (I've had a dozen Corvettes and even more Camaros), simply wanting to give a word of caution if you find yourself on old, poor roads in heavy rain!

I just had the same experience with mine! About 50mph max otherwise it was sketchy.

Man...this is my very first sports car & when I went to go pick it up, I looked at the tires and thought they were used there was so little tread!!

Mine will never see wet pavement if I can help it...scary thin & no place for the water to go if any sort of depth.

Unfortunately I feel your pain. I haven't had mine in much rain, nevertheless a bad downpour, but I will say, my ats-v is just as bad as your experience. It's all over the road in a heavy downpour. Slow and steady in the right lane is unfortunately the only way to go.

I was in a very heavy Florida downpour and was cruising along at about 65 and did not feel like I was hydroplaning. Strange. Tire pressure where it should be?

It's not bad when it's just a bit wet, but if there's standing water it's pretty sketchy.

Michelin Pilots are really recommended for daily driving.

Agree, wet roads are ok, but standing water or heavy downpours are a real problem and scary!

Took road trip in the ZL1 from Iowa to Texas. In kansas, hit a bad freak thunderstorm. Was on a really well maintained toll way. Standing water and the ZL1 equals instant speedboating and its pretty darn scary.

Good info! Thanks for the heads up

I can totally agree! I got caught in a heavy down pour a few weeks back. There was a lot of butt puckering going on. I was on the interstate and did not feel comfortable at anything over 50mph, and even had a few scary moments at that speed. Standing water is this car's kryptonite.

I think you'll get the same experience with any Extreme Performance Summer Tires

I have two sets of stock rims for my SS 1LE. Just put another set of G3's on yesterday. As mentioned before, they are 3/32" on the outboard area to 5 or 6/32" center and inboard. The Michelin Super Sports that I have on the second set are 9/32", and I believe the newer PS4's are the same.

While not as grippy as the G3's, they are WAY better in wet conditions with standing water. If not tracking the car, the Michelins are hard to beat for an all around high performance tire.

I've had the same experience and noted it on here previously. It's part of the trade off of having super sticky tires that are really amazing on the track. You can't have great track performance and great wet traction. These tires are really impressive on the track in the dry. I just know now that if it starts raining don't drove over 45 or 50 MPH. If you're not going to track this car, I would look at a less high performance tire with better wet traction for sure.
