If you can't afford to run premium, you can't afford the car.

If 93 is 70 cents more than 87 (which is INSANE), and filling up from drop dead with with a 19 gallon tank, that's only $13.30 extra you are paying. More realistically you are filling up with around 1/4 tank, call it 5 gallons, and most places premium shouldn't be more than 50 cents more than regular...that would work out to $7. Can you really not afford an extra $7 in gas a couple of times a month? If not, you need to sell the car and get something much cheaper.

He said this stuff is $3-4 a bottle and treats 21 gallons. The Premium gas would cost him around $12 more per tank full than Regular.

So, he wants to know if it would be OK to use Regular gasoline and add a bottle of Octane Booster instead of buying Premium gasoline.

What do you guys say about this?
Lol, is this for real? There's no logic to spending $50,000+ on a car and try to save $8 per fill up by boosting 87 octane gas with some snake oil in a bottle. How about he just drives the car less? That way you don't have to fill up as often and will actually save some money versus trying to skimp on the proper gas.

Hmmm. My owner's manual says 19 gallons.

I had a short stint as a gasoline tanker driver in San Diego in the 90's. I don't know if it's any different today, but back then when we loaded up, each grade of fuel came from the same bulk tank regardless of which station/brand it was headed for. The only difference at the fuel rack was at the end of the loading cycle, where brand-specific additives were mixed in.

Is this for real ?? it is not that much more for premium. He's worried about paying about $5-$7 more ? If he's worried about a few more cents for premium why'd he get an SS? Doesn't make sense. .
If he doesn't drive like a jack-rabbit he'll likely get better than 26mpg.

I agree, he got the wrong car.

Here in NC...several years ago Premium used to be only about .20-30 cents more than regular at most gas stations....but ever since we got a pipeline disruption in 2016 the difference has been gotten bigger .60 to even .80 cents.

Even still, it hasn't kept me from getting my ZL1.

I have logged enough miles on the GM LSx and LTx series engines to see the spark knock they trend. While the ECM will drop into the low octane tables to combat the spark knock / detonation, that isn't the way to handle it.

If you cant afford to run the fuel the manufacture recommends, then I would buy a vehicle that uses the cheaper grade fuels instead. I don't see why people buy performance vehicles, then skimp on the fuel as if it is doing them a favor or service.

The Camaro has a 16 gallon tank, from "E" @ $2.15 for 87 it cost $34.50 to fill up, or at $2.60 for 91 it costs $41.60. Sorry but the extra $8 per tank is worth it to me for the performance and knowing I am not submitting my engine to constant spark knock and detonation.
+1

Most knock is inaudible as well.

In southern California, where gas is MUCH more expensive than the national average, 91 octane is on average only twenty cents more than regular 87.

It's typically 30 cents difference here, then another 30-40 cents from 91 to 93.

I don't put anything but 93 in mine, but if the guy is such a penny pincher, he could just use 91 and only pay about $5-$6 a tank more since they're tuned to run on 91 (thanks to California).

QUESTION FOR THE PEOPLE

I have a 2.0L Turbo LT. The manual specifically says to use premium gas for better mileage and performance.

Using 93 Octane, the car does feel more responsive and zippy. Using 87, it feels like the idle is more rough and it is not as responsive.

My question is: do you really get more miles per gallon out of using premium gas or is it just a performance boost? I have run the tank from full to dry using both premium and 87, and the average MPG stays roughly the same regardless of what gas I use.

Other than an increase in performance, is there any other selling point for using premium in the 2.0L Turbo engine that is actually noticeable?

Have you done the mileage calculation manually or just going off what the computer says? The computer seems to overstate your actual fuel economy.

You should see a mileage boost when using premium because when it retards timing to prevent knock, it's not being as efficient as it could when using 87.

I'm just going off what the computer says. I agree- I think it overestimates the mileage. I have run my 2.0L Turbo engine for about 15000 Mi now doing 75% highway driving. My average since I got the car is about 22.6 MPG (10.4 L/100km). I land roughly in the mid 22 MPG range per tank regardless if I use premium or cheap gas. Doesn't seem right...
