I don't notice it at all. It was much more apparent in my 15 Silverado with the 5.3. Had a 13 Coyote Mustang and my SS avg's about 3mpg better.

I'm just going by what i see on the road. So i guess the kind of people who tend to drive those equipped cars are the real problem. I can hear the engine cycle and movement is always in this depressed "I guess i'll start accelerating or something" activity that they seem to not want to do.

It's almost as aggravating as someone who slows for a light half a mile away.

Not necessarily true with GM cars. The Cruze and Malibu do not have off switches. To be honest though, I have gotten used to the engine turning off at lights with my Cruze. Actually, I am surprised when it doesn't.

Cadillacs will have a button. There is hot debate in the company on whether the button should "latch" (off until you turn it back on) or "not latch" (you'd have to turn it off each time you started the car). The issue is, CAFE credits are different depending on setup. Full credit if there is no switch, like Cruze and Malibu. Some credit if there is a non-latching switch, less credit, or possibly even no credit if the switch is latching. When I left GM earlier this year, I was not aware of a final position on CAFE treatment for latching switches.

Sidenote: The way it's calibrated, leaving the air on max or turning on the rear defrost acts as an "off switch" of sorts.

I'm glad the current gen camaro doesn't implement that garbage. Hopefully by the time i drive my car into the ground we'll be on electric drivetrains and I can skip that entire mess.
There is a NHTSA standard that it has to achieve. It's something like 0.3 seconds. Most people can't move their foot from the brake to the accelerator in 0.3 seconds.

Post # 2 on this tread tells you how AFM operates. You tell me if you want all these extra complications over a straight push rod lifter operation. I know as the AFM turned my 5.3 into an oil burner and the lifters sing to me the clatter/clatter song. No AFM in the 6.2s till 2014. now starting to hear about lifter failures in the 6.2.

http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topi...how-afm-works/

You would save more gas by slowing your roll 5 mph or not going thru the drive through. I would range or tune it out. Not sure that will even save these other than normal AFM lifters. I just do not understand buying a 450 hp 6.3 and being OK with AFM drive train complications for less than 1 mpg.

I found it to be a decent feature. Just that it's timing is always less than optimal but I blame our crap drivers for that.

The only thing that scares me is when it goes in to V4 mode it makes a different kind of noise from the engine. Almost like a flapping kind of noise. I'm assuming this is the legendary 'clatter' that eventually kills the engine in the long term.

As for the start/stop. The malibu loaner I had wasn't that bad. Even though I had it for one day, I learned to manipulate it and turn on the engine when I know the light is about to turn green. Although I can never see our camaros having such a feature considering it takes a solid few seconds just to turn on.

Don't really care for AFM. Can only hear it go in and out of v4 mode. Wish there was a factory setting in the DIC where we could enable or disable it if we choose

Wish I had AFM lol. I would be getting 32 mpg on a road trip easy... Instead of 28-30. It should however only have existed in an "ECO MODE". If you were in any other mode, it should not be in so I can see why it can be "annoying" to have, like the 1-4 shift but unlike the 1-4 you cannot just avoid it by accelerating past 2k rpm and avoid it lol.

Just for reference, every Porsche has this since about 2014. Maybe not the 911 GT3, but then again, it might. I can't find info to confirm it either way. But since it uses the same 7-speed DCT that other 911s use, I think it might.

I don't mind it saves me a few bucks on gas but it bothers me when I can't hear my engine sound...

I don't like the exhaust values auto closing when the speed goes up. It kills the V8 sound. (even in track mode)
So I pulled the exhaust fuse. Now the side effect is whenever AFM deactivates I can hear a noticeable pop sound. So.. I tuned it off by using Diablo i2.

I wish GM could have done it in a different way... ECO mode of something so we can decide when to turn it on or off.

I pulled the NPP fuse at 250 miles because of the NPP rattle. Low speed AFM activation causes a valve clack and reduced sound from exhaust.Transition from AFM to V8 mode creates a noticeable exhaust burp ( partially caused by NPP fuse pull)

I dislike AFM in any condition other than highway driving above 65 MPH. Otherwise the vibration, chuggle or whatever it's called is noticeable.

As well, with the windows or the top down, the injectors or fuel pump make a very loud ticking, (audible to most everyone and embarrassing for a V8 sports car), especially with light acceleration and load ( mild incline).

Why does the auto keep the car in 6th or 7th gear @ 40-48 MPH and then activate AFM? The rpm range at that speed is VERY low for 4 cylinders to pull a heavy vehicle... lug, lug, lug.

Why not an overdrive button for highway use.... or even for those that want their city driven miles to utilize AFM?

If I wasn't worried about killing my battery, or the warrantee, I'd buy the range or tune it right out of the car.

Love the car, HATE AFM

AFM doesn't bother me that much, but every now and again when I'm driving like an adult the engine gets a little wobbly/rattlers and I'm aware that it's AFM

Also, I dislike those little exhaust valves, totally kills my idle sound... a little bailin wire and to wire those puppies open and I was right as rain

Anyway I can force it into v4 mode the entire time I drive? Sometimes when going to work or long trips id like to use just 4cyl so I can save a few bucks on gas.
