Tire replacement decision

On the way to the Camaro6 fest in BG KY, I blew a tire in Fort Wayne IN. It's a bit of a long story, but I'll keep it short. I kind of knew it before, but searching for replacement tires in the size to fit our cars in an emergency situation is very difficult, let alone having any kind of choice. I ended up with one Hankook on the rear. I cancelled my plans for drag racing and Camaro-cross because I didn't want to try it with mixed compounds. The car definitely has a weird feel to it in turns when driving just a little aggressively. I also did a mini-burnout just to try it out, and the right rear Eagle F1 definitely gripped better than the Hankook.

I'm in the process of trying to figure out what tires to go with. The run-flats were not on my list until the blowout, but found out that limits my choices even more for total replacements based on the standard OEM sizes.

Does anyone have advice for brand/type of summer performance replacements tires as far sticking with OEM sizes, tweaking sizes, the effect on accuracy of the speedometer/odometer on OEM wheels.

I may just get a used Eagle F1 to defer my decision until next year, but would appreciate the perspective of anyone that has already been through this decision process.

Bill

I went with the continental dws06 and I'm surprisingly enjoying them. They seem to get off the line better, much quieter, great in rain and cooler temps. Jury is still out on the high speed handling in curves.

Depends on how much you want to spend.
FWIW - You can probably get a full used set of factory F1 A3 take offs with very little wear on them in the classifieds here for the price of a new tire or 2.

For DD purposes the stock sizes seems to work well on the different road surfaces that are out there.

If you track the car, then other choices may be considered.

Been thinking about this a lot lately, I know I am nearing needing a new set.
If money wasn't issue I would get the Michelin Pilot Sport 4's.
But I just cant see myself spending that much, especially since the car is just my DD and I don't take it to the track.
Therefore I am seriously considering the Sumitomo HTR Z III's.
Good luck.

I've done fine with the std Goodyears. Going to look for another, NEW, take off set in the future.
I already have a spare set of wheels for my non summer tires , A very handy situation.

What STILL BOTHERS me is lack of a SPARE TIRE. I'm tempted to buy one of those donut spares so I can stop worrying. Then again I have a complete set of spares in my garage....should I have a tire failure locally I'm OK. But what about when I'm 500 miles from home?

ANYONE running a spare?

For anything you do on public roads they'll be more than enough. I had them on my '16 C7. All the latest gen of UHP A/S tires will be fine.

If you expect them to hold up against UHP Summer only tires on the tracks, then you'll be disappointed.

i007spectre: FWIT I put a set of Sumitomo tires on my daily driver Equinox and after approx. 500 miles they were so noisy/hard I replaced them with another brand.

Were they specifically to Z III's?

Are these the all-season's? I haven't considered all-seasons, but I am curious.. So better traction then the Eagle F1's in dry traction?

I am actually probably going to get a used Eagle F1 to make it until next year. As far as a track car, I plan on a little bit of drag racing, but will go with an all around good performer.

Sumitomo HTR Z III's are really inexpensive.
DWS06 is an all-season tire, one of the best available for our sizes.

Reviews online look decent, and price is very agreeable.

Yes they're all seasons. I'm gonna run them down the 1/4 this weekend. It seems to be getting off the line much better. I did 12.2 bone stock the F1's

Curious on your impressions after you do this. Assume you have an A10, based on the 12.2. I did a best of 12.83 about a month ago on Eagle F1's and my car is bone stock too.

I agree...if you don't really care to upgrade, just buy all the take offs that everyone is putting up on the classifieds. Great way to save money.
